Abstract大同雲岡石窟與洛陽龍門石窟皆為元魏所開, 至今垂千五百年有零, 而遺跡猶存, 氣象宛在。拓跋氏當初興佛之盛, 由此可以想見。然而追 本溯源, 北魏佛教的興起當與十六國時期涼州地區佛教的影響有著直接關系。對此,《魏書·釋老志》寫道:涼州自張軌後, 世信佛教, 敦煌地接西域, 道俗交得其舊式, 村塢相屬, 多有塔寺, 大延中, 涼州平, 徙其國人於京邑, 沙門佛事皆俱東, 像教彌增矣。這一記載告訴我們: 第一, 涼州地區從張軌的前涼直到最後被元魏吞滅的沮渠北涼, 其間約一百多年時間, 各割據政權都“世信佛教” ; 第二, 因為河西地接西域
, 是佛教演布的孔道, 故這一地區佛教興盛,“多有塔寺” ; 第三, 由於北魏平涼州, 從那裡徙走大量道俗人眾, 使“沙門佛事皆俱東” , 導致北魏的“像教彌增”。這段話脈絡清晰, 措辭明確, 毋庸置疑, 惜文字過於簡略。下面擬遵循這一記載的思路, 用較多的事實對五涼佛 教的興盛及對南北朝的影響作一論述。
