AbstractThe important Indian Buddhist missionary Dharmakṣema (385-433) spent most of his time in China at Guzang 姑臧 (present-day Wuwei 武威, Gansu), the capital city of the Northern Liang (397-439). Scholars are divided as to the date of his arrival in Guzang. What is at stake here is not merely how to pin down the most critical turning point in the career of this significant figure, or to date a number of Buddhist translations prepared under his direction, but also how to understand some central aspects of the state-church relationship in the Northern Liang, which had far-reaching impact on north China after it was unified by the Northern Wei rulers in 439. In addition to proposing a new solution to this thorny issue, this article also intends to show that an appropriate understanding of some events and figures important in Chinese Buddhism may well hinge on an apparently trivial philological conundrum. It also underscores the necessity and worthwhileness of closely reading monastic materials against secular ones when we are addressing certain issues which might appear to be purely monastic ones at first glance. Le missionnaire bouddhiste indien Dharmaksema (385-533) passa la plus grande partie de son séjour en Chine à Guzang 姑臧 (actuel Wuwei 武威, Gansu), la capitale des Liang Septentrionaux (397-439). Les spécialistes sont en désaccord sur la date de son arrivée à Guzang. Le problème n'est pas simplement de situer exactement le point tournant le plus important dans la carrière de cet important personnage, ou de dater un certain nombre des traductions bouddhistes préparées sous sa direction: il s'agit aussi de comprendre certains aspects cruciaux des relations entre l'État et l'Église sous les Liang Septentrionaux, lesquelles ont eu un impact profond en Chine du Nord après que celle-ci eut été unifiée par les Wei Septentrionaux en 439. Outre qu'il propose une nouvelle solution à ce problème épineux, l'article cherche à démontrer que la compréhension de certains événements et de certains personnages importants dans l'histoire du bouddhisme en Chine repose sur celle de problèmes philologiques en apparence triviaux. Il souligne également la nécessité et la valeur d'une confrontation soigneuse des matériaux monastiques et séculiers lorsqu'on s'intéresse à certains problèmes d'importance à première vue purement monastique.
