Abstract | In this paper, various attempts to found an environmental ethics in Buddhism are subject to critical considerations. It is shown that the criteria for an adequate environmental ethical theory require theoretical accommodation of internal value in nature and natural entities, and existence of natural diversity and holistic entities with distinct ontological status. However, this proves to be too restrictive for any attempts to construct a Buddhist environmental ethics.
