Abstract In my recently completed MA thesis, dedicated to the study and annotated translation of The Treatise on Seeing One's Nature and Attaining Buddhahood (見性成佛論 Kensho jobutsu ron), I show that the text is most likely realated to the corpis attributed to or associated with Dainichibo Nonin 大日房能忍. My thesis also contains a detailed examination of the basic ideas of the text, examingaion actually undertaken for the first time.
In the present paper, I tackle its doctrinal stance from two different angles: (1) the sources cited or referred to in the text; and (2) the criticism of Buddhist scools and interpretations different from the Zen tradition. This analysis sheds more light ipon the basic philosophical position of The Treatise on Seeing One's Nature and Attaining Buddhahood and points even more convincingly to the possibility that the work is closely related to Nonin. It is hoped that this will lead to a better understanding of Nonin, the man and his thought. The paper also presents my conjectures concerning the dating of this text.
