Abstract | This paper deals with approaches to the construction of the Chinese Buddhist canon from ancient times to the present. In ancient times, the purpose of making a Buddhist canon was mainly religious. The compilation of the Japanese Taishō Edition marked a shift in motive from religious to academic. The Zhonghua dazangjing 中華大藏經 (Zhonghua Buddhist Canon) has furthered this principle by incorporating the notion of macro-culture into its compilation of the Buddhist canon. Finally, the author offers his own viewpoints on the construction of the present Buddhist canon. |
