In recent years, a batch of Buddhist cliffside carvings in Tubo period were found successively in eastern Tibetan area. The inscription in the carvings provided us with quite a lot of valuable information about the construction of the carvings. We were able to know from the existed carved inscriptions that the organizer of the project was the famous monk Go Ye shes dbyang, and the purpose of the project was "For the sake of the merits and virtues of Tsanpo and the sentient being, Buddhist images and prayers were carved". However, in fact, the most important historical context was mentioned in the inscription "at the beginning of forming an alliance with Tang". Thus we could infer that these images and inscriptions were carved by the monastic team organized by Ye shes dbyang in order to promote the alliance between the Tubo and Tang when this issue was put forward again. The core value of these carvings was based on the concept that "Buddha bears witness to the alliance". We could further speculate that the purpose of the construction of the carvings was the same as that of some other caves, monasteries, and edicts, which were bulit to commemorate the alliance in the Tubo dynasty.
