Abstract | Confucianism is not only the standard for conduct but also the fundamental thought of politics among the Chinese dynasties. Confucianism designated Chinese emperors to carry out two most important rituals, the ritual for Heaven and the ritual for ancestors. These rituals required animal sacrifices. Emperor Wudi of Liang dynasty believed in Buddhism, so he tried to perform ritual for ancestors without the animal sacrifices. He criticized “Shenmielun” and advocated reformation of the Ancestral Shrine. That reformation was realized after about 10 years. |
