Abstract寄禪法師(AD.1852-1912)集晚清詩僧、禪門巨擘與佛教領袖為一身,身處晚清國勢動盪與佛教命運危急的時代,繼而成為晚清佛教領袖,並於1912年擔任甫成立之「中華佛教總會」首任總會會長。寄禪法師在民國前後歷任多座叢林住持,尤醉心於詩作,往來頻繁於詩社而有晚清詩僧之譽。

從晚明至晚清時期,中國大陸寧波天童禪寺一系有詩作傳承之風,含蘊有詩禪相發的禪宗美學氛圍。寄禪法師在其詩作與詩風之中,流露出愛國憂民悲憫蒼生與護持佛教弘法利生的入世情懷,同時也呈現禪韻幽妙,意在言外,與因境轉悟,詩心禪境之詩風。時值晚清時局動亂的年代,寄禪法師在其詩作中顯露了熱血激憤入世護教之情,又間融了雲水禪思出世灑脫之悟,此正是本文討論探究之核心重點。

寄禪法師創作詩歌的心路歷程,在其棲心苦吟與推敲文字的過程中,顯露了對人生苦難遭逢的淒淒之感與憂鬱情結,在詩句錘鍊佳句與唯美藝術表現之間,可見寄禪法師欲將生命層次向上提升,將生命之美學透過詩歌之吟誦表現出來,甚至將禪悟之境、詩韻之美與護教熱忱無縫連接起來,詩禪相發,禪詩互證,輝映發明。因此,寄禪法師詩風顯現禪悟灑脫與詩興空靈之妙,兩者之間,亦間雜融入對人生無常之體悟與人世悲歡家國之悲的深沉感慨。寄禪法師一生憂國愛民與弘法護教,在其詩作中有禪心意韻與詩心國魂,亦將世間法與出世間法相融無間。寄禪法師圓寂後塔曰「冷香」,亂世中之禪者,冷香傳世,提供後人景仰與無限追懷。

Ji-chan Master (AD. 1852-1912) integrated in poetic monk, Chan great master and Buddhist leader at late Qing Dynasty and he lived in Age of Turbulence and dangerous fate of Buddhism, subsequently became a leader of Buddhism at late Qing Dynasty, as well as appointed as the first chairman of Chinese Buddhist Association after it was established. Ji-chan Master successively acted as the abbot of several Buddhist monasteries before and after the Republic of China, he was dedicated to poetry and regularly went and came to poets league and was named as poet monk at late Qing Dynasty.

There is always succeeding in poem in Tiantong temple in Ningbo (China mainland) from Late Ming Dynasty to late Qing Dynasty; in which there was some asthmatic atmosphere resulting from poetic Chan. In Ji-chan Master’s poetry and poetic style, secular feelings for patriotism, sorrow for people and pity on the livelihood as well as protection of Buddhist benefit for livelihood were naturally revealed whitin poetic style of poetic mood that Chan rhythm out of words and enlightenment by environment also appeared. At the turbulence of late Qing Dynasty, Ji-chan Master revealed warm-hearted and the wrath of the world and protection of Buddhism from his poems, also incorporated enlightenment of generosity out of the world about Yunshui Chan thought, which became key point for discussion and studies in this Article.

Heart Access about poem creation by Ji-chan Master revealed his sorrowful and depressed feeling about one’s hardships in the course of elaboration for poetry and words study. Moreover, between poetic words tempering and asthmatic artistic presentation, we disclosed that Ji-chan Master desired to improve life level of Buddhist monasteries and present life aesthetics by reciting poetry; even seamless access to mode of Chan enlightenment, beauty of poetic rhythm and warmhearted protection of Buddhism, featuring mutual poet and Chan enlightenment, mutual proof of Chan and poet. So, Ji-chan Master’s poetic style revealed generous enlightenment and poetic inspiration, between which there incorporated in deep feeling about irregular life and sorrow for family and country. Sorrow for livelihood and patriotism and protection of Buddhism by Ji-chan Master not only revealed in form of Chan rhythm and poetic patriotism; but also intimately incorporated in his conventional law and ultimate law. Ji chan Master was named as Lengxiang after he passed away;Lengxiang succeeded in it during turbulent world would be admired and limitlessly missed among descendents.
