AbstractThe Sayanāsanavastu, or ‘Section on Bedding and Seats’, is a collection of rules related to the place of practice of Buddhist monks. It also refers to the donation of vihāras by lay believers such as Anāthapiṇḍada, and explains how the Buddhist Samgha should receive and manage such vihāras. Furthermore, the text describes the function and role of vihāras from the points of view of both Buddhist monks and laymen. Six early schools of Indian Buddhism, viz. Theravāda, Dharmaguptaka, Sarvāstivāda, Mahıśāsaka, Mahāsamghika, and Mulasarvāstivāda, have each transmitted their own ‘Section on Bedding and Seats’. Here, I present a Japanese translation of the Sayanāsanavastu of the Mulasarvāstivādavinaya in comparision with relevant texts in the Pali Vinaya and the four Chinese versions of the Vinaya(『四分律』,『十誦律』,『五分律』,『摩訶僧祇律』) , as well as the Tibetan translation of the Sayanāsanavastu, in order to shed light on the real life of Buddhist Monks in India.
