With the introduction of Buddhism Japan came into intimate contact with the Continental culture. Every grade of our society was saturated with its influence, but from the national viewpoint of history it will be seen in another light. In other words it was the process of the struggle of new ideologies with the old. The aim of this article is to interprete the introduction of Buddhism from this new angle--first to trace the national character in our religious beliefs, secondly to see in those beliefs some tendency toward the Buddhistic Weltanschauung and lastly to explain the specific character of Buddhism of the Asuka (飛鳥) era in the religious development of our country in general.
