Abstract
본고는 禪敎兼修와 講學의 중시라는 조선후기 불교의 교학 전통 속에서 湖南의 대표적 講院인 白羊寺의 강학과 그 역사적 특성을 고찰한 것이다. 즉 조선후기 불교 강학→ 호남 교학과 백양사 강학→ 근대 불교 교육과 백양사 강원의 단계별 구성을 통해, 호남이라는 지역성을 고려하면서 전통의 계승과 근대적 전환의 관점에서 접근하였다. 17세기 전반에 성립된 강원 교육과정인 履歷課程은 선교겸수의 지향을 특징으로 하며 이를 계기로 강학과 교학 중시 경향이 강화되었다. 조선후기 최대 문파였던 鞭羊派의 진출과 함께 많은 교학 종장들이 호남에서 배출되었는데 그 중 대표적 교학자인 蓮潭 有一의 제자 羊嶽 啓璇 계통이 18세기 후반 이후 백양사의 講脈을 형성하였다. 또 선종 우위론의 입장에서 19세기 禪 논쟁을 촉발시킨 白坡 亘璇도 백양사 강학에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 따라서 백양사의 강학 전통은 호남 교학을 대표하는 두 흐름의 공존, 선과 교의 이중 구조가 교차하는 접점으로 볼 수 있다. 한편 근대 불교 교육제도의 성립과 함께 백양사에도 신식 학교교육과 전통 강원교육이 병행하였다. 근대 백양사 강원의 강학은 유일의 법맥을 이은 曼庵 宗憲, 긍선의 학맥을 이은 漢永 鼎鎬로 대표되는데 이들은 전통 불교를 계승하면서 학문과 교육의 측면에서 근대 불교의 방향성을 모색한 것으로 평가된다.


The propose of this study is to consider the Buddhist lecture and historical characteristic of the Baekyang/白羊 temple, which is representative of Buddhist lecture halls in the Honam/ 湖南 area, by considering the tradition of doctrinal teaching of the late Joseon Buddhism focusing on Seongyogyeomsu/ 禪敎兼修 (simultaneous training of meditation and doctrine) and the Buddhist lecture tradition. This paper considered a local trait of Honam and performed a study from the viewpoint of traditional succession and also modern transfer through step by step organization, i.e., lecture of the late Joseon Buddhism→doctrinal teaching of Honam and the lecture of Baekyangsa→education of modern Buddhism and Baekyangsa lecture hall. The historical process, which is the education process/履歷課程 of this lecture hall founded in the early 17th century, is oriented towards Seongyogyeomsu and it reinforced the tendency to give priority to lecture and doctrinal teaching. As the Pyeonyang school/鞭羊派, the largest school in the late Joseon, advanced into government, many Buddhist scholars of doctrinal teaching were produced in the Honam area. Among them, the genealogy of Yangak Gyeseon/羊嶽 啓璇, who was the disciple of representative scholar Yeondam Yuil/ 蓮潭 有一, formed the lecture tradition of Baekyang temple after the late 18th century. From the aspect of theory of Seon/ 禪 Priority, Baekpa Geungseon/白坡 亘璇, who triggered Seon dispute in the 19th century, also gave a critical effect to the lecture of the Baekyang temple. Therefore, the Buddhist lecture tradition of the Baekyang temple can be understood as the coexistence of two flows, which represent the doctrinal teaching of Honam, and contact point where the dual structure of meditation and doctrine intersects. When the education system of modern Buddhism was established, the Baekyang temple kept pace with modern education and traditional lecture at the same time. The lecture organized by the modern lecture hall of the Baekyang temple is represented by Manam Jongheon/曼庵 宗憲 inheriting the lineage of dharma of Yuil and Hanyeong Jeongho/漢永 鼎鎬 inheriting that of Geung Seon. It is evaluated that they inherited traditional Buddhism and searched for the direction of modern Buddhism in terms of study and education.
