| Abstract | 본고는 일본 문헌에서만 전하는 분황사 출신 현륭의 학계와 사상에 대한 선행연구를 재검토하고, 주로 교넨이 인용한 현륭의 일문에 근거하여 현륭 유식사상의 특징과 학계에 관해 고찰해 보고자 하는 논문이다.
먼저 11식론과 관련하여, 현륭은 진제역 『무상론』에서 유래하는 수자식 개념을 취하고 있다는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 다른 섭론학파의 견해와도 일치하는 것이다. 11식과 4식의 포함관계에 대해서도 현장역 『변중변론』을 의도적으로 무시하고 진제역 『중변분별론』에 의거한 논의를 전개하고 있음을 살펴보았다. 교넨에 따르면 현륭의 견해는 섭론학파 도기의 그것과 유사한 것이다. 9종훈습설 및 유식의 의미과 관련하여, 현륭은『 성유식론』의 설명을 알고 있음에도 불구하고 그것에 따르지 않고 있다. 심분설과 관련해서는 일관성 있는 설을 주장하지는 않지만, 8식설에 관해서는 섭론학파의 설과 가까운 설을 주장하고 있다.
이러한 일문의 내용에 근거해볼 때, 현륭이 섭론학파와 매우 밀접한 관계를 가졌다고 추측하는 것이 자연스러울 것이다. 이에 비해 『현륭장』 전체 내용을 파악하고 있었을 일본의 전승은 현륭을 현장 문하 중에서 기(基)와는 다른 입장을 보였다거나 법상종에 속한 인물이라고 전한다. 하지만 본고에서는 특히 법상종이라는 규정에 대해 그것이 후대 일본의 종파명에서 유래한 것이라는 사실을 중시하고, 이 규정을 선대로 거슬러 올라가 현륭에게 적용하는 것을 무리일 수 있다는 문제를 제기하였다.
현 단계에서 현륭의 일문에 근거한 그의 학계에 대한 판단은 불완전할 수밖에 없다. 그럼에도 일종의 작업가설적 결론을 내린다면, 현륭은 섭론학파 출신으로서 섭론학파의 입장을 완전히 버리지 않고, 당시 새롭게 번역되고 세력을 확장해 가는 신역의 여러 학설도 적극적으로 섭렵한 인물이라 평가할 수 있다. 이러한 현륭의 입장은 당시 신라 유식학계의 흐름을 반영한 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
In this paper, I first summarize the results of previous studies on Hyeonryung, and examine his works that appear in the citations of Gyonen 凝然 (1240-1321). Thereafter, I re-examine the characteristics of his Yogācāra thought and his academic lineage.
On the eleven consciousnesses, Hyeonryung’s understanding of the reception consciousness 受者識 is based on the explanations found in the Wuxiang lun 無相論, and coincides with descriptions that appear in other literature of the Shelun 攝論 doctrinal lineage.
Regarding the relation between the Eleven Consciousnesses and Four Consciousnesses, Hyeonryung shows a position which is very close to that of the Shelun School 攝論學{派. At least regarding such relation, Hyeonryung does not show any influence exerted by Wonhyo 元曉 (617-686), nor also any trace of his having referred to the new translation by Xuanzang 玄獎 (602-664).
As for the Nine Kinds of Permeations Theory and the meaning of Conscious-only theory, Hyeonryung seems to be aware of the of the theories expounded in the Cheng weishi lun 成唯識論, but did not adopt them for his own.
On the question of Hyeonryung's school affiliation, Annen 安然 (841?-915?) and Gyonen state that Hyeonryung, among the disciples that studied under Xuanzang, showed a different position from that of Ji 基 (623-682) and belonged to the Dharma-character school 法相宗. As this paper describes, however, Hyeonryung seems to be a scholar-monk closer to the Shelun School rather than belonging to the Dharma-character school. Consideing this connection, it seems that Gyonen’s stipulation that Hyeonryung belongs to the Dharma-character school must be re-examined with regards to Hyeonryung's academic lineage.
