Abstract일반적으로 인도불교사상사에서 ‘연기사상(pratītyasaṃutpāda, 緣起)’은 부파나 학파에 따라 매우 다양하게 해석되지만, 이는 ‘법(dharma)’의 다양한 개념형성과 긴밀한 관계를 가진 불교사상체계의 요체로서 간주된다.
사실 초기불교의 ‘연기사상’은 대체로 4제 연기나 12연기 등 매우 다양한 교설의 형태로 제시된다. 이러한 연기사상은 주로 ‘연기와 법(dharma, 法)’이나 ‘연기와 공성 (śūnyatā, 空性) 등의 관련 맥락 속에서 아비다르마 불교와 반야・중관을 거쳐 유식사상에 이르기까지 다양한 형태로 제시되고 있다.
따라서 이 논문은 인도불교사상사에서 연기사상의 그 사상적 전개양상에 주목하여, 주로 ‘연기와 법’이나 ‘연기와 공성’ 등의 관련성과 그 사상적・철학적 함의에 초점을 두고 초기유식사상이 가지는 그 사상적 연속성과 불연속성적인 특성을 살펴보았다.
이를 통해 이 논문은 인도불교사상사에서 이제와 삼성설이 성립되기 이전과 그 이후로 대별하여, 결국 초기 유식사상은 ⓐ법성에서 법으로의 사상적 전환과 ⓑ법에서 법성 으로의 사상적 전환이라는 두 양상으로 전개되어 왔음을 명확히 제시하였다.

Generally speaking, dependent origination (pratītyasaṃutpāda) is understood diversely by Abhidharma schools in the history of Indian Buddhist thought. But it is regarded as the core of Buddhist thought that has an intimate relation with the development of various conceptions of dharma.
In fact, the ideas of dependent origination in early Buddhism, on the whole, are presented in diverse forms of doctrines such as the dependent origination of Four Noble Truths, Twelve Nidānas and so on. This principle of dependent origination is also presented in various forms within the context of discussing the relation between "dependent origination and dharma" or between "dependent origination and emptiness(śūnyatā)." And such diverse concepts of dependent origination can be discerned in the traditions Abhidharma, Prajñāpāramitā, Mādhyamaka, and Vijñānamātra theory.
Therefore, this paper examines the issue of the philosophical continuity and discontinuity of the Vijñānamātra theory in its early phase. In order to conduct such a survey, a special focus is placed on the philosophical implication of the relation between dependent origination and dharma, or between dependent origination and emptiness.
Furthermore, this paper pays attention to the process of philosophical development in the ideas of dependent origination.
On the basis of the examination this paper makes a distinction between the period when the theses of two truths (Satyadvaya) and threefold nature (Trisvabhāva) were not established yet and the period when they were established. Such a distinction then leads to the conclusion that the early Yogacara thought is explicitly characterized by ⒜ the transformation from dharmatā to dharma, and ⒝ that from dharma to dharmatā.
