Abstract | This paper is the fourth part of our critical edition of the Tibetan text and Japanese translation of chapter XXIV of Avalokitavrata’s Prajñāpradīpa-ṭīkā. Verse 18, one of the most influential verses in the history of Buddhist philosophy, includes four fundamental concepts: pratītyasamutpāda, śūnyatā, prajñaptir upādāya, and madhyamā pratipat. Most scholars of Madhyamaka have focused on Candrakīrti’s brief commentary on the verse in his Prasannapadā , while the more expansive and illuminating commentaries by Bhāviveka and Avalokitavrata have been largely neglected. They use their commentaries on this verse to develop a detailed analysis of the distinction between two truths, in a way that Candrak ̄ırti does not. This paper provides a translation of Bhāviveka’s and Avalokitavrata’s interpretation of this important verse. |
