Abstract麈尾作為魏晉名士的風雅之物屢見於這一時期的文詞、造像、繪畫之中,乃至玄風道骨一路下延後代而為道教之拂塵,然殊不知此物乃魏晉六朝,
尤其南朝四代風行一時的活動——講經說法時出家僧眾所執之物,下至於今,寺院方丈晉山升座、上堂說法、傳授大戒,麈尾與錫杖、如意、缽為四種重要表法之物。溯源而上,麈尾在佛制時代,即公元前五世紀的古印度便已有之,用以拂蠅的日常用品,耆那教天衣派以及印度教也有將拂塵作為法器的情況,孔雀王朝時期眾多的造像中也有出現為數不少執持拂塵的形象。後大道東來,vyajana 亦隨之而來華,除了日用之外,成為講經儀軌之一,即「講師舉麈尾,聞問者語。舉問了,便傾麈尾,即還舉之,謝問便答。」魏晉清談講經奉行,尤其南朝,文化僧深入清談士大夫圈層,乃至統治最上階級,因而麈尾又隨之流入宮廷與當時社會文化潮流引領者的文人士大夫中,之後再回流到民間,乃至儒道教。
