In this paper, I looked at the changes in the status of local temples in the early Goryeo period, focusing on the Geumsansa Temple. The Geumsansa Temple was famous for the activities of the Reverend Jinpyo (眞表), but there are few relevant historical records.
In the Goryeo Dynasty, it was discussed that Sohyeon (韶顯, 1038-1096), a royal preceptor, established the Kwangyowon (廣敎院) there, and he led the prosperity of the yoga department (瑜伽業, Dharma-characteristics school) and the publication of the Canonical Works (敎藏). However, there is no mention of the Geumsansa Temple before and after Sohyeon.
So in this paper. I clarified the process of the changes in the status of the Geumsansa Temple in the Goryeo Dynasty by utilizing the artifacts and document records as many as available. I noticed who built the five-story stone pagoda and how the ordination platform (戒壇) was used. In particular, I emphasized that the Geumsansa Temple was a temple with a space for official ordination, and that it has an important social and historical meaning.
