Abstract | 우리나라 근현대 고승들은 대부분 禪師이고 唯心淨土를 주장하며 아울러 他方淨土를 수용하고 있다. 그 근원으로 가보면 고려 후기에 선승들에게 이런 경향이 보인다. 당시 고려 후기에 중국 북송시대 영명연수(904-975) 스님과는 밀접한 관계가 있었다. 영명연수 스님은 법안종과 정토종에서 추앙받았으며, 『종경록』100권을 저술하는 등 선사이면서 정토염불을 수용하고 수행하였다. 이러한 영명연수 스님의 가풍을 이어 우리나라 보조지눌 스님은 『정혜결사문』에서 유심정토를 말하고 타방정토를 수용하는 것으로 보인다. 우리나라 학자들 중 심재룡교수는 보조지눌 스님은 타방정토와 유심정토를 인정하지 않았다고 하였다. 권기종 교수도 타방정토는 인정하지 않았고, 유심정토는 수용했다고 보았다. 그런데 길희성 교수는 유심정토와 타방정토 모두 수용하였다고 보았고, 신규탁 교수도 같은 입장이지만 통시적 현재성으로 보았다. 논자는 길희성 교수와 신규탁 교수와 같은 입장인 보조지눌은 유심정토와 타방정토를 모두 수용하였다고 보았다. 그런데 根機的인 면에서 보아 上根機는 유심정토이고, 下根機는 타방정토라고 보았다.
Most of the modern and contemporary high Buddhist priests of our country are the Seon Masters. They have been arguing for the Mind Only Pure Land. And, in addition, they have been accepting the Other World Pure Land. If we try going to the root, such a tendency is shown among the Seon priests in late Goryeo. At the time, in late Goryeo, during the Beisong era, there had been a very close relationship with the Buddhist monk Yeongmyeong Yeonsu (904-975). The Buddhist monk Yeongmyeong Yeonsu had been held in high esteem by the Fayan School and the Pure Land Sect. And, while being a Seon Master, including the writing of the 100 volumes of the Jonggyeongrok and the others of the like, he had accepted and performed the Jeongtoyeombul (the Buddhist Paradise Prayers). It appears that, by continuing such a family tradition of the Buddhist monk Yeongmyeong Yeonsu, in the Jeonghyegyeolsamun, the Buddhist monk Bojo Jinul of our country had been talking about the Mind Only Pure Land and had been accepting the Other World Pure Land. Among the scholars of our country, Professor Shim, Jae-ryong had said that the Buddhist monk Bojo Jinul had not recognized both of the Other World Pure Land and the Mind Only Pure Land. Professor Kwon, Gi-jong had seen that the Other World Pure Land had not been recognized and the Mind Only Pure Land had been accepted. But Professor Kil, Hee-seong had seen that both the Mind Only Pure Land and the Other World Pure Land had been accepted. And, although he had the same position, Professor Shin, Gyoo-tak had seen them as the diachronic nowness. I, the writer, had seen that Bojo Jinul, whose position had been the same as the positions of Professor Kil, Hee-seong and Professor Shin, Gyoo-tak, had seen that both the Mind Only Pure Land and the Other World Pure Land had been accepted. But, when we look at the aspect of capacities, the Mind Only Pure Land was for the persons with high capacity, while the Other World Pure Land was for the persons with low capacity.
