| Abstract | 근대한국불교의 연구에 있어 한암(1876-1951)에 관한 연구는 많지 않은편이다. 근현대 한국불교에서 한암이 차지하였던 위상과 역할을 감안할 때이러한 연구의 과소는 이례적이라고 할 수 밖에 없다.
본고에서는 지금까지 근대한국불교의 연구에서 간과되었던 한암의 역할을다른 두 인물과의 대조를 통해 부각시켜보고자 한다. 우선 만해와 대조시켜보고자 한다. 한암(1876-1951)과 만해(1879-1944)는 같은 시대를 살았고 둘다 불교를 통해 자신의 삶을 완성해간 사람들로 알려져 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 두 사람의 선택은 극과 극이라 할 만큼 대조적이었다. 그렇기 때문에한암의 삶을 새롭게 이해하는 단초를 여기에서 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 한암과대조하고자 하는 또 다른 한 인물은 경허(1846-1912)다. 두 사람 모두 간화선 수행을 강조한 선사이면서 시대를 바라보는 안목과 그 행적은 크게 대조된다. 선종이라는 전통을 공유하는 가운데 두 인물의 서로 다른 착목 지점들을 살펴봄으로써 근대불교사에서 경허와 구별되는 한암 고유의 역할과 위상을 확인해볼 수 있을 것이다.
In modern Korean Buddhism, not much research on Hanm(1876-1951) has been carried out. This is unusual when considering his achievements and influences on this field. This paper has focused on Hanam, who has been relatively overlooked, by comparing him with two other Buddhist monks, Manhae(1879-1944) and Kyeongheo(1846-1912).
Hanam and Manhae have been known as scholar-monks who staked their lives on Buddhism as well as were contemporaries. Since they went in the complete opposite directions, studying them could give an opportunity to understand Hanam’s life. When comparing with Kyeongheo, although both of them were great Buddhist monks who practiced ‘Gahwa Seon’, their perspectives on the world and achievements were different. In the other words, while sharing the tradition of Soen, they paid attention on different factors. Thus, looking at their pursuits and ideas reveals the uniqueness of Hanam’s influences and achievementsthat should be differentiated from Kyeongheo. |
