| Abstract | 본고의 목적은 정신분석적 자기심리학의 주요 개념들인 ‘자기’, ‘공감’, ‘자기대상’을 미국 조동선에서 강조하는 ‘不二’ 혹은 ‘합일’ 개념과 대비하여 서로의 유사성을 모색하는 것이다. 이러한 논의의 바탕이 되는 것은 자기심리학의 ‘자기’, 즉 비실체적이고 외부세계와 상호작용하는 자기의 개념과 조동선의 무아 사상이다. 이러한 목적을 위해 우선 미국의 禪과 심리치료의 역사를 개괄해보고, 두 분야의 통합논의를 소개했으며, 이어서 자기심리학과 미국 조동선을 개괄적으로 설명했다. 자기심리학에 대한 설명은 그 이론적 기반인 자기와 자기애의 개념으로 국한하여, 프로이트의 정신분석학 모델과 비교하면서 제시했고, 미국 조동선 사상에 대한 설명은 스즈키 슌류 로시의 『禪心初心』의 내용을 분석함으로써, 자아의 개념과 합일 사상을 상세히 논구해보았다. 결론에서는 한국불교가 심리치료와 통합되기 위한 전제조건으로서 불교가 종교로서보다도 삶에 지침이 될 철학으로서 현대인들에게 친숙해지도록 만들 필요가 있음을 역설했다.
The purpose of this article is to seek certain similarities between the notion of non-dual oneness, namely a catch-phrase of Soto Zen in America, and those of the self, empathy, and selfobeject, or the three major concepts of psychoanalytic self-psychology. To reach this purpose, the author overviews the history of Zen and psychotherapy in America, and then introduces some discussions for the integration of the two disciplines. This is followed by the introduction of self-psychology by focusing on the notions of self and narcissism, the two fundamental conceptual devices, in comparison with the Freudian classical model. The next chapter discusses thoroughly the concept of oneness in Soto Zen through analyzing Shunryu Suzuki’s Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind which contains the essence of Soto Zen in America. The notion of non-dual oneness, which the author argues for from both disciples, is demonstrated based upon insubstantial aspects of the self concept in self-psychology. In conclusion, the author puts an emphasis on the new role of Korean Buddhism as a guide to contemporary man rather than as a religion.
