| Abstract | 선과 교에 정통했을 뿐만 아니라, 사서삼경과 노장사상, 역사와 민족종교, 음양오행과 풍수지리 모두를 꿰뚫는 혜안을 갖춘 분이 있었다. 간산 탄허 스님이었다. 탄허 스님의 활동기가 1972년 10월 유신 이후 1976년 박정희 피살과 1980년 광주민주화운동으로 이어지는 한국의 정치적 암흑기였기에 세인들은 스님의 가르침 가운데 특히 한반도의 미래에 대한 도참적 발언에서 희망을 찾으려 하였다.
탄허 스님은 증산교의 일파인 보천교의 강한 영향 아래서 성장하였고, 면암 최익현 계통에서 유학을 공부하였는데, 스님의 예지에서 보이는 ‘진한 민족주의적 정서’는 이에 기인한 것으로 생각된다. 한반도와 지구의 변화에 대한 스님의 도참적 발언들은 주로 김일부의 『정역』에 근거한 것으로 많은 내용들이 그대로 실현되었지만, 일어나지 않은 일들도 많이 있었다. 스님의 도참사상은‘미래에 대한 예언’이라기보다, 세계의 변방에서 정치적 암흑기에 신음하던 우리 사회의 구성원을 향해 던진 희망의 메시지였다고 생각된다. 탄허 스님의 예지는 요컨대‘선의 가득한 당위의 미래학’이라고 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
There was a brilliant Buddhist monk who was expert in East Asian philosophy, history, Ethnic religions, Yin-Yang(陰陽) theory and Fengsui(風水). His Dharma name is Tan Heo(呑虛: 1913~1983). He studied and practiced in Gangwondo. In 1972 he moved to Seoul, the Capital of South Korea. Until the year of his death(1983), he met many professors, students, officials and politicians. He played a role not only as a Buddhist preacher but also as a Great Prophet. He was influenced strongly by Korean Ethnic religion Bo Cheon Ggyo(普天敎) and Confucian scholar Choi Ik Hyeon(崔益鉉), and many of his prophecies were based on Jeong Yeok(正易) of KIm, Il Bu(金一夫). He talked on the promising future of Korea. Many people were interested in his foretelling. He played a role as a Buddhist preacher in a politically dark age of Korea. People of Korea wanted to find political and economic hope in his prophecy.
Surprisingly many of his prophecies were come true. As he had foretold, President Park died, American army were defeated in Vietnam war and Korean culture is spreading all over the world…etc. But some of them were not even happened. I can conclude that his prophecy was not a simple foretelling but a kind of Futurology that taught what should have been done by Koreans. |
