| Abstract | 본고의 목적은 불교의 교학적 입장이 진화론의 근본주장과 양립가능한지 또, 양립가능하다면 어떤 점이 그러하며 그렇지 않은 점은 무엇인지를살펴보려는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 불교와 진화론의 공통점과 차이점을큰 구도에서 논의했다. 공통점은 무엇보다 현상의 변화를 설명하는 데 있어 목적론을 전제하지 않는다는 점이다. 반면 차이점은 불교가 심-신 이원론에 입각해서 세계와 생명현상을 설명하는 데 비해 진화론은 철저히유물론에 입각해 있다는 점이다. 이런 공통점과 차이점을 고려하면서 진화론과 불교 사이의 접점을 (1) 최초의 생명의 탄생에 대한 진화론의 추정과이에 대응하는 불교경전에 관한 논의, (2) 유전자의 역할과 그에 대응하는불교 이론의 설명 및 그 함축된 의미, (3) 이타성의 문제와 그에 대응하는불교 윤리라는 세 가지 점으로 요약해 논의했다. 그리고 이에 대한 논의를 위해 진화론의 설명은 분자생물학의 입장을 대변하는 도킨스의 『이기적 유전자』의 내용을 중심으로, 그리고 불교는 유식학의 관점을 중심으로 해서설명했다. (1)의 서술을 통해 불교와 진화론이 가진 유사성과 차이점이 식의 존재를 인정하느냐의 여부에 달려있다는 사실을 보여주고자 했다. (2)의설명을 통해 진화의 핵심적 내용을 이루는 DNA의 작용이 불교에 따르면업으로 해석할 수 있음을 보여주고자 했다. 그러면서 DNA를 업으로 해석하여 수용했을 경우에도 생겨나는 난점들을 설명했다. 마지막으로 (3) 도킨스의 경우, 유전자 차원과 개체 차원을 구분함으로써 유전자의 ‘이기성’과개체의 행동이 직접적 관련이 없기에 개체가 생물학적으로 이타적 행위를할 수 있을 가능성을 단지 열어놓고 있는데 비해, 불교에서 DNA를 업으로해석한다고 해도 개체의 이타성을 제한할 어떤 이론적 장애도 없다는 것을업종자와 개체로서의 식의 관계의 논의를 통해 해명하고자 했다.
The aim of the present paper is to examine the possibilities,whether Buddhist theories are compatible with the basic ideas of the Evolutionism, presented in Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene. For this purpose I began to sketch the different and similar aspects of the two traditions: the similarities lie mainly in the fact that they do not presuppose any teleological design in explaining the changes of the phenonenon. As far as the discrepancies are concerned, Buddhist traditions, basing themselves on the mind-body dualism, try to explain the issues of the ‘living being’ and the surrounding world,whereas the main stream of the Evolutionism defends the materialist viewpoint for that matter. Recognizing these factors, I focus on three points in order to discuss the relevant topics between two traditions:(1) on the descriptions of the origin of the life on earth, (2) on the role of DNA in the molecular biology, and of the corresponding Buddhist theories, particularly in the Yogācāra Buddhism, (3) on the problem of the altruism and Buddhist Ethics. In case of (1), I try to point out that the main difference of the Buddhism to the Evolutionism depends on the acceptance of the ‘consciousness (vijñāna)’ as the leading principle of living beings. In case of (2), the role of DNA,which is central to the evolution of living beings, can be compared with and interpreted as a kind of ‘latencies of karman (karma-bīja). I discuss also the difficulties arising in the interpretation of DNA as the latencies of karman. In case of (3), I would show that there are no theoretical obstacles to undermine the altruistic behaviors of each person, notwithstanding the identification of the DNA with karma-bīja.
In this respect, it shares the common ethical ground with Dawkins,who sees the altruistic behaviors possible at the level of living organism, though at the level of the DNA it is solely motivated by its ‘selfishness’.
In the present paper, I have to restrict the source materials to the very limited number, i.e. to The Selfish Gene as a representative work of the molecule biology on the one hand and Yogācāra Buddhism on the other hand, so as not to violate the obscurity caused by the vastness of the research objects. |
