| Abstract | 한국불교 범패(梵唄)의 기원은 불교의 수용 시기만큼 오래되었다. 한국불교의 범패는 불교의 예참, 공양, 천도, 점안 등 다양한 의식(儀式)을 통해 불자들의 신앙적 욕구를 충족하고 불교의 사회적 기능을 수행해 왔다. 수륙재(水陸齋)는 억울하게 죽은 영혼을 해원(解冤)하고 왕생극락토록 하는 종교의식일 뿐만 아니라 생자와 사자, 지배층과 대중들이 어우러져 계층 간의 단합과 사회적 긴장 해소, 국가 수호의 의지를 확인하는 공동의 축제마당이기도 하였다.
수륙재가 고려시대에 처음 수용된 이후 불교 도량들 가운데 가장 빈번히 설행된 이유는 수륙재가 가진 사회 갈등의 순기능 때문이기도 하다. 삼국시대와 가락국 이후 수많은 왕조들에 대한 예참, 그리고 인도로부터 도래한 서천(西天) 28조와 중국 조사의 6조, 한국 9산선문의 조사들에 대한 공양이 수륙재 의식을 통해 이루어졌다. 이는 수륙재가 한민족으로서 국가의 안녕과 더불어 불보살 및 조사들에 대한 결속을 도모하는 신앙적 다짐의 장이었다는 사실을 반영한다. 이러한 전통이 억불(抑佛)의 조선시대에 들어서도 단절되지는 않았다. 특히 조선시대 후기에 『범음산보집(梵音刪補集)』이 새로이 찬집되면서 기존의 수륙재 의식집을 통합하여 선불교와 민족종교로서 가영과 가무가 어우러지는 새로운 범패의 지평을 열었다고 할 수 있다.
수륙재를 구성하는 의식에는 3종자 진언, 5선정불 진언과 선문의 끽다거와 같은 오도(悟道)의 권고가 어우러져 수륙재가 제사 중심의 공양과 제불보살의 권화만을 빌리는 낮은 수준의 의식이 아니었던 점이 발견된다. 수륙재를 시행하는 범패승은 3종자 진언의 장음을 통해 법신·보신·화신의 일체종지(一切種智)의 경계를 넘나들고, 5선정불이 향수하는 법계체성지(法界體性智)·대원경지(大圓鏡智)·평등성지(平等性智)·묘관찰지(妙觀察智)·성소작지(成所作智)의 전의(轉依)와 유가행(瑜伽行)을 이해하고, 선가의 화두를 농락할 수 있어야 했다. 이러한 것들이 수륙재의 상징적 소재를 형성하고 있기 때문이다.
『범음산보집』에 보이는 수륙재의 상징적 소재들은 고혼(孤魂)들의 해원 과정에서 범패를 시연하는 승려들을 통해 선불교의 오도(悟道)와 소식을 반영하고, 선(禪)과 유가(瑜伽)의 수행 경지를 드러냄으로써 대중과 사회를 불세계로 인도하는 한국 범패의 독자적 세계관을 반영하는 것으로 생각해볼 수 있다.
The historical records showing beginning of Beompae(Buddhist hymns) in Korean Buddhism reflects the ritual of offering, salvation of soul and consecration of Buddha statue, etc which satisfies the religious wishes of Buddhist and fulfill the social function of Buddhism to maintain the society and nation. Suryukjae(Buddhist Ritual on Water-Land) is a Buddhist ritual to save the desperate soul from unhappy death but also a festival for dead and live people, ruling class and subjugated class to be unified and be concord, and for social relax and to confirm the will of protecting nation.
The rite of Suryukjae was imported from chinese Buddhism in Koryo dynasty and has maintained its popularity until today which to recognize and new understand the tradition and names of ancestors of Indian Buddhism and Chinese Seon, and masters of Korean Seon Buddhism along with all the dynasties and kings of Korea to boost the historic pride of Korea, which the Suryukjae is more than a rite of limited religion.
It was wrote lots of commentaries and rule material of Suryukjae in korean Buddhism but Beom Eum San Bo Jip wrote in Chosun dynasty is noteworthy as the book opened new horizon of integration of Beompae and Seon Buddhism which is filled with unique material of poem, dance, art and music and mixture of yoga and Seon of Buddhist practices. Especially the matter of Buddhist practice provides the fundamental of new understanding of Beompae to revive it as a Buddhist practice both for Buddhist priests and lay people. |
