| Abstract | 이 논문은 Bodhicaryāvatāra를 읽어 가면서, 또 11세기부터 17세기 사이에 쓰인 샨티테바의 세 가지 전기를 읽어 나가며, 그의 삶에서(그 절정기는 7세기 말부터 8세기 전반이다) 일어난 전설적이고 아마도 역사적인 주요 사건들을 간결히 그려 보고, 아울러 인도 중관(中觀) 전통에서 샨티데바의 위치를 살펴본다. Bodhicaryāvatāra(入菩提行論) 서두에 실린 시에서 샨티데바(Śāntideva)는 보리심(bodhicitta)를 찬양한 뒤 보리심이 양면적임을 알아야 한다는 사실을 강조한다. 하나는 보살의 발심, 즉 깨달음을 향한 관심(bodhipraṇidhicitta), 다른 하나는 깨달음을 얻는 과정으로서의 실현이다(prasthāna). 맨 처음부터 샨티데바는 보살의 윤리적 결단, 다시 말해 보편적 선, 모든 중생의 최상의 선(sarvattvānāṃ sarvasau- khyā-tham)을 향한 결연하고 끊임없는 노력(udyama)을 강조한다. 그는 냉철한 태도로 서두의 시에서 수가타(붓다)의 아들, 즉 불자로서의 수련으로의 입문을 설명할 것이라 선언하고(Sugatātmaja- saṃvarāvatāraṃ kathayiṣyāmi), 제9장(혹자는 후대에 삽입된 것이라 한다)에 이르기까지 철학적 문제들을 언급하기를 꺼린다. 그리고 넌지시 아쉬바고샤(Aśvaghoṣa, 馬鳴), 또는 아상가(Asaṅga 無著)를, 어쩌면 그가 아는 지역에서 한 세기 정도 앞서 활동했던 중관 논사인 바비베카(Bhā[va]viveka, 淸辯)를 암시하면서, Bodhicaryāvatāra를 쓰는 동기는 그의 문학적 기량을 보여주려는 것이 아니고 그의 저술은 그런 데 전혀 관심이 없다는 것을 밝힌다. 여기 제시된 샨티데바는 자주 언급되는 바와 같은 신비가(神祕家)가 아니다. 오히려 그는 반야경(般若經)류에 열거되어 있고 또 Vinayaviniścaya Upālipari- pŗcchā에 훌륭하게 서술되어 있는 덕목들을 갖춘 보살 수행자의 영웅적 상을 경탄할 만한 모습으로 그려내고 있다.
After praising the thought of awakening (bodhicitta) in the verses opening the Bodhicaryāvatāra, Śāntideva stresses (I.15) upon the fact that the bodhicitta should be known as twofold: the bodhisattva preliminary resolution, otherwise said the attention directed toward awakening (bodhipraṇidhicitta), and its realisation that is the course to attain (prasthāna) it. From the very beginning, Śāntideva emphasizes the bodhisattva ethical commitment, the strenuous and continuous effort (udyama I.27cd) exerted for the universal good, the summum bonum of all sentient beings (sarvattvānāṃ sarvasaukhyārtham). He is sober, if not austere, and announces in the opening verse that he will explain the entry into the discipline of the son of the Sugata (Sugatātmajasaṃvarāvatāraṃ kathayiṣyāmi I. 1cd) and, until the IXth chapter (that some authors consider to be a later addition) he is reluctant to tackle philosophical issues. And when, possibly with a veiled allusion to Aśvaghoṣa, Asaṅga or, why not, to Bhā(va)viveka, the Mādhyamika Master who, a century before him or so was supposedly active in regions known to Śāntideva, he further specifies that the motive of writing the Bodhicaryāvatāra (I.2-3) is by no means to show his literary skillfulness, and that his writing is totally disinterested (cf. I.25). We may thus hazard saying that rather than a mystic as it has so often been referred to, Śāntideva admirably paints the heroic figure of the bodhisattva practitioner, whose qualities are listed in the Prajñāpāramitā literature, and so nicely recalled in the Vinayaviniścaya Upāliparipṛcchā. This paper will try to jointly read the Bodhicaryāvatāra and three hagiographical narratives that were composed later, in a period spanning from the 11th to the 17th c.. in order to succinctly draw the main legendary and (possible) historical events of his life whose floruit may be put toward the end of the 7th – first half of the 8thc., while showing the place of Śāntideva in the Indian Madhyamaka tradition.
