| Abstract | 우리는 왜 지금 보편성과 특수성에 관해 질문하는가? 불교에서는 과연 그 보편성과 특수성이 어떻게 나타나고 있는가? 이러한 문제는 부분과 전체, 상대와 절대 등에 관한 형이상학적 물음이기도 하지만, 역사적 실존 인물로서의 붓다와 영원한 법신으로서의 붓다의 관계에 대한 물음으로 제시되기도 한다는 점에서 불교적 삶의 문제이기도 하다.
우리는 이러한 물음의 전형적인 예를 화엄에서 발견한다. 특히 4종법계에 관한 논의는 보편과 특수의 관계에 대한 다양한 이해의 스펙트럼을 보여주는데, 이 가운데 사사무애법계는 보편과 특수의 상즉・상입을 보여준다는 점에서 불교적 사유가 극한에 이른 것으로 파악된다. 그런데 이러한 사유의 근저에는 초기불교 이래의 중도의 논리가 자립잡고 있으며, 이 중도의 철저한 자기해체의 논리는 중국불교의 특징적 유형 가운데 하나인 화두선에도 그대로 적용된다.
‘상반된 것의 동시성립’으로 표현될 수 있는 불교적 사유는 과정론 또는 실천론의 맥락에서 ‘나아감과 돌아옴’으로 형상화될 수 있다. 화엄의 경우 그 구체인 예는 의상의 『화엄일승법계도』이다. 여기에서 시작과 끝은 같은 자리에 놓인다. 시작과 끝은 다른 것이지만, 다른 한편으로 같은 자리에 있을 수밖에 없음에서 비롯되는 역설은 “가고 또 가도 본래의 자리이고, 이르고 또 이르러도 떠난 자리”(行行本處 至至發處)라는 말로 표현되기도 한다. 중국 선종의 경우 이러한 상황은 『십우도』에 극적으로 제시되어 있다.
이러한 논의에서 나아감과 돌아옴이 일회적 사건이 아니다. 우리는 매 순간 각 자 새로운 출발선에 서 있다는 것이 위 논의들의 요체이다. 그것은 우리가 미완이어서가 아니라 매 순간 존재와 의미의 충만 속에 끊임없이 관계를 맺어가는 상호존재라는 점을 보여준다. 불교가 말하는 이론과 실천은 결국 이러한 점을 바탕으로 하는 것임에 틀림없다.
Why do we ask about the universality and speciality? And how have the universality and speciality been represented in Buddhism? These problems are basically metaphysical ones, but those are also the problems of Buddhistic way of life in so far as they are sometimes suggested as the question on the relations between the historical Buddha and the eternal dharmakāya.
We can find the most representative example of such questions in Huayen Buddhism. Especially the theory of 4 dharmadhātu shows the spectrum of the diverse understandings on the problem of the universality and speciality, and the ‘non-obstruction of particular and particular dharmadhātu’ can be understood as Buddhist way of thinking which have reached to the utmost limit, because it talks about the mutual identity and the mutual dependency of the universality and speciality. We can find the logic of middle way beneath these ways of thinking, and this logic of middle way, which shows the exhaustive self-dismantlement, has continued unchanged to the Chinese Zen Buddhism.
The Buddhist thought which can be explained as the coincidence of the opposites can be imagined as ‘quest and return’ in the context of process or practice theory. The concrete example in Huayen Buddhism is Diagram of the Dharmadhātu According to the One Vehicle of Hwaom by Uisang. In this text the beginning and the end are located at the same place. The paradox which is originated from this situation is represented as following : “Though we go and go, that is the original place; though we arrive and arrive, that is the starting place.” In Zen Buddhism this situation is suggested dramatically in Ten Diagrams of Herding Cows.
In these disputes ‘quest and return’ is not only one single event. The real meaning of these disputes is that each one stands at every moment on the starting point. This is not because we are incomplete, but because we are inter-beings who make relationships continuously at each moment with fullness of existence and meaning. And this is the very point which the Buddhist theory and practice are established.
