Abstract한국 근대불교는 근대종교로 거듭나기 위해 문명개화를 지향하였고 전통불교의 개혁을 추진하였다. 하지만 식민지기의 사찰령 체제 하에서 불교는 정치적으로 종속되었고 정교분리에 입각한 교단의 자율성 확보는 현실적으로 불가능했다. 불교 근대화를 위한 대중화 모색은 시대적 과제였지만, 그 귀결은 대처식육이라고 하는 정치적 논리의 불교 세속화였다. 대처식육은 일본 메이지기에 근대화를 위한 식산흥업, 신도의 국교화와 불교의 성역 해체를 목표로 단행된 조치였고, 식민지 조선에서도 정교일치 체제하에서 정치적 논리에 의해 추진되었다. 결국 불교의 근대화는 전통부정과 체제지향적 국가불교라는 왜곡된 역사상을 남겼고, 정치적 종속에서 비롯된 세속화는 청산되어야 할 식민지 유산이 되고 말았다.

Modern Buddhism of Korea aimed at civilization and searched for innovation of traditional Buddhism in order to be reborn as a modern religion. Under the system of temple provisions in the colonial age, however, Buddhism was dependent on politics and it was impossible to secure autonomy of religious body based on the separation between politics and religion. Although the popularization search for modernizing Buddhism was an assignment of the age, its conclusion was political secularization called 'monk's eating meat and marriage life'(帶妻食肉). It was the policy that was performed for modernization such as increase of manufacture and growth of industry, establishment of Shintoism as a state religion or dissolution of Buddhist holy ground in Meiji Period of Japan. In colonized Joseon, it was also performed according to political logic under the system unifying politics and religion. After all, the modernization of Buddhism left the distorted historical images such as tradition denial and system-oriented national Buddhism and secularization that was originated from political dependence became the ruins of colonial age that shall be removed.
