| Abstract | 불교에서 전쟁은 정당화될 수 있는 것인가? 오늘날 세계는 냉전시대의 종식에도 불구하고 국지전은 계속되고 있어, 여전히 전쟁이 영구히 종식될 가능성은 희박해 보인다. 호전적이거나 전쟁 긍정적 사고에 반대하는 입장에서 불교는 평화 애호적 종교라는 입장이 일반에 있어서는 상식적인 견해라고 할 수도 있을 것이며, 이러한 입장에서의 논문들도 발표되고 있다.
그러나 전쟁에 대한 무조건적인 반대보다는 어떠한 의미에서 전쟁에 반대하는가에 대한 천착도 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 또한 인류가 땅 위에서 살아가는 한 전쟁을 피하기 어렵다는 점에서, 그러한 어려운 상황, 곧 전쟁을 불가피하게 하는 조건은 무엇인가에 대한 불교적 입장을 살펴보는 것도 불교를 이해하고, 나아가 인간을 이해하는 데 중요한 기반이 될 수 있다.
본고에서는 이러한 입장에서 초기불교에서 붓다는 어떠한 입장에서 전쟁을 반대하며, 불가피한 전쟁이 일어나지 않게 하는 데 있어서의 조건은 무엇이라고 밝히고 있는지를 살펴보고, 그러한 초기불교의 입장에 기초하여, 임진왜란은 일본과 한국 양측 불교에서 어떠한 의미로 정당화되거나 방관되고 있었는지를 살펴본다. 이러한 연구는 전쟁 당시 양국의 사회적 질서의 정당성 여부에 대한 보다 포괄적 연구로 이어질 수 있을 것이다.
Can war be justified in Buddhism? Nowadays, in spite of the end of the cold war, local wars continue to threaten humanity, making the hope of warless world into just a vacant dream. It might be commonsense that Buddhism is a peace-loving religion, nay, the most or uniquely peace-loving religion.
However, some concrete investigation on the reasons or conditions against war in Buddhism, rather than criticizing war without any reasoning, can be also said to be important in that it enables the objective study and responsible action upon unavoidable and real situation of humanity.
In such a context, here we, firstly, investigate from what grounds the Buddha opposes war, enumerating the conditions for preventing war and maintaining a sustainable society. Secondly, we investigate from what grounds the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592 might possibly have been justified in Japanese Buddhism and from what reasons the Korean monks' military resistance to Japan might possibly have been justified in Korean Buddhism. |
