| Abstract | 고대 인도인들의 대중적 신앙대상인 yakkha는 불교이전에는 고대 인도의 주류신화에서 인도아리안적 신격의 善性과 대비되는 惡을 상징하는 존재로 그려졌다. 나무와 물이라는 상징과 연관되어 있는 야차는 이 요소가 상징하는 풍요와 다산 그리고 생식과 연관된 존재로서, 대중적 신앙의 요소를 두루 갖춘 존재로 고대인도인들의 삶의 양식인 농사에서의 풍요와 많은 자손과 같은 현세적 행복과 밀접한 관련을 가진 신앙적 존재로 점차 그 위치를 아리안 주도 하의 고대 인도사회 속에 각인시키게 된다. 힌두신화 속에서 묘사된 야차의 적대적이고 악한 성격은 그러나 야차가 불교의 신격으로 수용되면서 그 성격에 변화가 나타나게 된다.
힌두적 전통의 신화에서도 야차는 선악적 요소를 동시에 가진 존재로 서사시시대부터 그려지기 시작한다. 이러한 선악적 양면성을 가진 존재로서의 야차의 모습이 불교에 수용되면서 불교경전에 나타난 야차의 모습도 기본적으로는 선악, 양면을 동시에 가진 존재로 그려진다.
그러나 힌두서사시문헌에 나타난 야차와 불교경전에 나타난 야차는 모두 선악의 양면을 가진 존재로 묘사됨에도 불구하고 그 내용에 큰 차이를 보이고 있다.
초기불교경전인 Nikāya에 나타나 있는 야차는 붓다와 불법과의 관계 속에서 선한 존재로 묘사되며 악귀로서의 윤회적 삶을 벗어나 예류과를 얻어 해탈을 지향하는 존재로 그려진다.
그러나 니카야에서의 야차는 오직 붓다와 불법과의 연관 하에서만 그들의 善性이 보장된다.
그러나 니카야보다 후대에 성립한 빨리법구경 주석서, Dhammapadaṭ hakathā에는 야차의 善性이, 붓다와 불법과의 연관과 상관없이 언급되고 있다. 따라서 이제 야차는 인도의 대중적 신격으로 불교와 민간신앙 양쪽에서 대중적 영향력을 가진 신앙 대상으로서의 자신의 존재를 명확히 하게 된다.
The present paper aims at examining the nature of yakkha in Pāli liteature. Yakkha which occurs later Hindu literature of ancient India has been worshiped by indigenous people in ancient Inda and the yakkha is not seen in the early Hindu literature. The confrontational relationship between Ariyan and indigenous people is seen in the nature of yakkha. The gods from Indo-Ariyan represent the good but the deities from indigenous are characterized by the evil. The increasing influence of yakkha to the ancient people enables yakkha to be popular deity which has two aspects of the god and the demon.
The nature of yakkha in the Buddhist literature has also the same aspect as in the Hindu literature, but the Buddhist literature includes not only the nature of yakkha in the Hindu literature but also it gives yakkha new characteristics. The Pāli Nikāyas mention that yakkhas are merely not the deities but they are regarded as a religious beings.
The good nature of yakkha mentioned in the Nikāyas is limited by whether yakkhas are influenced by the
Buddha or his Dhamma. In the Dhammapadaṭṭhakathā, the nature of yakkha is not influenced by the fact which yakkha believes in the Buddha or his teachings or not. It means that the influence of yakkha worship has been increased and yakkha has been accepted by major Ariyan culture and that yakkha as a good deity plays significant role, in which yakkha helps people and makes them accomplish their desires. |
