| Abstract | 임제의현에 의해 처음 제기된 삼현삼요는 대단히 이해하기 어렵다. 그런데, 원래 玄은 도가의 개념으로서 임제는 도가의 영향을 받고 있다. 삼현의 해석에 있어서 중요한 인물은 汾陽善昭․薦福承古인데 특히 천복승고는 최초로 삼현을 體中玄→句中玄→玄中玄으로 나누고, 단계를 설정하였다. 그런데, 체중현→구중현→현중현으로 나누는 기준은 ‘진리를 정확히 드러내는 방법’이며, 이것은 도가의 言․象․意의 관계에 대응시킬 수 있다. 즉, 체중현은 ‘말에 의해 당체속의 현묘함(體中玄)을 드러내는 단계’이며, 도가의 言에 해당된다. 그러나, 이 단계에서는 말에 집착할 가능성이 있으므로 구중현을 세워야 한다. 구중현은 ‘의미없는 말을 통해 말 속의 현묘함(句中玄)을 드러내는 단계’로서, 도가의 象에 해당된다. 이 단계에서의 말은 活句이기는 하지만, 언구가 남아있는 것은 어쩔 수 없다. 마지막의 현중현은 ‘말을 떠나서 현묘하고 또 현묘한(玄中玄, 玄之又玄) 진리를 드러내는 단계’로서 도가의 意에 해당된다. 한편, 禪門綱要集은 禪門寶藏錄의 저자인 眞靜天頙이 저술한 것으로, 삼현삼요에 대한 한국 최초의 교의서이다. 뿐만 아니라, 조선시대의 백파긍선과 초의의순에 의해 전개된 三種禪논쟁을 유발시킨 문헌이기도 하므로, 삼현삼요해석에 있어서는 빠트릴 수 없는 문헌이다.
The Three Marvelous and Three Essentials(三玄三要) were suggested by Linji Yixuan(臨濟義玄) is very incomprehensible terms. Primarily, Xuan(玄) is the concept of Taoism and Yixuan was influenced by Taoism. Jianfu Chenggu(薦福承古) systemized the Three Marvelous as Marvel in the Essence(體中玄), Marvel in the Phrase(句中玄) and Marvel in the Marvel(玄中玄). Marvel in the Essence is the level that displays truth by using words, and is applicable to word(言) in Taoism. Marvel in the Phrase is the level that displays truth by using incomprehensible words, and is applicable to Images(象) in Taoism. Marvel in the Marvel is the level that displays truth by using skillful usage like waiting for a good while(良久), silencing(黙言), striking with a stick(棒) and shouting(喝). And it is applicable to meaning(意) in Taoism. Another hand, The text of Chan school's essence(禪門綱要集) is the first manual about The Three Marvelous and Three Essentials in Korea. Furthermore, it raised a controversy about Chan between Baekpa-gungseon(白坡亘璇) and Choyi-yisun(草衣意恂) in Chosun Dynasty. |
