AbstractMi la ras pa was a yogin who lived in Eastern Tibet in the 11th century. He is known for the religious songs that he spontaneously composed on the basis of his own experiential understanding of Buddhism. He did not leave behind any books nor did he attempt to create a systematic exposition of the Buddhist path. Hence, although it is clear that he valued the practice of meditation above doctrine, it is hard to discern his view towards meditation. Buddhist teachings commonly explain meditation in terms of the foundational practices of śamatha and vipaśyanā.

How did Mi la ras pa view these practices? Did he consider them essential? Although Mi la ras pa did not leave any descriptive works on the topic, my paper will elucidate his view on meditation through the records left by his disciples. I will show that by examining the rJe btsun chen po mid la ras pa’i rnam thar zab mo written by Mi la ras pa’s direct disciples, we can come to a clearer understanding of his view on the teachings of śamatha and vipaśyanā.
