Abstract | The “rise of China” has become a fixture of historiographical discourse. The trope of China's rise, however, brackets much of the historical complexity of Eurasia. Long ago, before the dominance of Western European political ideologies, statecraft in Asia was much more diverse – ethnically, culturally, politically, linguistically, and spiritually – than the monolithic nation-state model reveals today. |
