| Abstract | 화암사의 불화는 현재 8점이 남아 있으며, 19세기에서 20세기 초까지 총 4-5차례에걸쳐 제작된 것들이다. 화승들은 주로 전라도와 그 인근에서 활약하거나 이 지역과 인연이 깊은 이들이며, 수화사로는 성수, 성념, 묘전, 봉은, 화삼이 참여했다. 화승들 외에 용암혜언과 허주덕진이 불화 불사에 크게 기여했다.
화암사 불화는 도상적인 측면에서 보았을 때, 선행 도상을 수용한 작품도 포함되어 있긴 하지만, <지장보살도>와 <석가삼존십육나한도> 등에서는 기존과는 다른 새로운 도상이 시도되었다. 다음으로 화풍상의 특징이 크다. 특히 화암사 의상암 <석가삼존십육나한도>와 <신중도>는 화사 성념과 묘전이 그린 것인데, 화사가 기록되어 있지 않은화암사 <아미타설법도>와 위봉사 <아미타설법도>에서도 동일한 화풍이 확인된다. 또한 화암사 용현암 <산신도>도 화사가 불명확한데, 봉은이 그린 화암사 <현왕도> 및 안성 운수암 <산신도>와 화풍이 거의 같아 화사를 파악할 수 있다.
완주 화암사의 불화는 19세기에서 20세기 초 불사 동향과 승려들의 활약상을 파악하는데 주요하며 그 인근 지역 불화의 제작 양상을 살펴보기에도 중요한 작품군이다.
Hwaam Temple has a total of eight paintings. They were produced in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The leading painter each painting was Sungsoo, Sungnyum, Myojeon, Bongeun, Hwasam. the famous monks Hyeeon and Deokjin played a major role, too.
Buddhist paintings of Hwaam Temple could be divided into two groups, one that actively embraced the preceding iconography and the other that attempted a new ones. Representative example of the former is Tejaprabha Buddha Preaching, and the latter works are Ksitigarbha, Shakyamuni Buddha Triad and the Sixteen Arhats, Next, the paintings of Hwaamsa were also clear on the characteristics of the pictures. Shakyamuni Buddha Triad and the Sixteen Arhats and the Guardians of Uisangam Hermitage belonging to Hwaam Temple are painted by Sungnyum and Myojeon that have their own styles. By the way, Amitabha Preaching of Hwaamsa Temple and Amitabha Preaching of Wibong Temple are similar in style.
Therefore, these paintings also show that they have drawn by the two monk painters. The Mountain God of Yonghyeon Hermitage belonging to Hwaam Temple is similar to the technique of Hyeonwang of Hwaam Temple painted by Bongeun.
The paintings of Hwaam Temple in Wanju are not only helpful for understanding the trends and performances of the temples in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but also important for examining the production patterns of temples in Wanju and the surrounding area. |
