| Abstract | 『벽암록』 제63칙 「남전참묘」와 제64칙 「조주재혜」는, 『종용록』과 『무문관』 같은 공안집에서 한데 묶여 하나의 공안으로 되어 있는 데서 알 수 있듯이, 서로 밀접하게 연관돼 있다. 제63칙에서 남전은 고양이를 두고 ‘이다’, ‘아니다’ 하며 다투고 있던 승려들에게 “말하라, 그러면 베지 않겠다”고 명령을 내렸으며, 승려들이 아무 말도 하지 못하자 고양이를 베었다. 제64칙에서 조주는 승려들이 아무 대답도 못했던, 남전의 “말하라, 그러면 베지 않겠다”는 말에 짚신을 벗어 머리에 이고 바깥으로 나가는 행동을 취해 대응했다.
남전의 “말하라, 그러면 베지 않겠다”는 말은 승려들로 하여금 ‘이다’, ‘아니다’를 보류하게 하는 동시에 의문을 생성하게 했고, 승려들이 아무 말이 없자 고양이를 벤 행동은 ‘말하다’, ‘말하지 않다’를 보류하게 하는 동시에 의문을 생성하게 했다. 남전의 말과 행동은 이렇듯 물음을 생성하게 하는 문제이기에 무의미의 활구(活句)이다.
짚신을 벗어 머리에 이고 바깥으로 나간 조주의 행동은 “말하라, 그러면 베지 않겠다”는 남전의 말에 대응하여 취한 행동이지만, 남전의 물음에 대한 답인 것은 아니다. 조주의 행동 역시 남전의 행동과 마찬가지로 ‘말하다’와 ‘말하지 않다’는 긍정과 부정을 벗어난 무의미의 활구이다.
“말하라, 그러면 베지 않겠다”는 남전의 명령에 대응하여 승려들은 아무 말도 하지 못했지만, 조주는 짚신을 벗어 머리에 이고 바깥으로 나가는 행동을 취함으로써 말함과 말하지 않음의 양 극단에서 벗어나 남전의 기봉(機鋒)에 기봉으로 대응할 수 있었다.
The 63th Gongan[公案], Namjeon[南泉] Kills a Cat and the 64th Gongan, Joju[趙州] puts his straw sandals on his head in the Blue Cliff Record, as we see that both Gongans are brought together into one, are closely related to each other. In the 63th story, when Namjeon saw the monks of the east and west halls arguing over a cat, he held up the cat and said “if you can speak, I won’t kill it”. At the moment no one replied, he cut the cat in two. In the 64th story, Joju responded to the Namjeon’ words, “If you can speak, I won’t kill it” by taking off his straw sandals and putting them on his head.
Namjeon’s words, “If you can speak, I won’t kill it” made the monks suspend arguing over the cat, and at the same time generate a question as to what we were going to answer. His behavior that he cut off the cat made the monks suspend saying or not saying, and generate a question as to why their teacher cut off the cat. As such, Namjeon’s words and behavior are the living phrases[活句] of nonsense since they are the problems that gernerate questions by which the monks and we who read this story try to resolve. Joju’s behavior is not the answer to the question “If you can speak, I won’t kill it”, even though it responded to Namjeon’s words. Joju’s behavior is the living phrase of nonsense that deviated from the affirmation and negation, like Namjeon’s behavior.
