| Abstract | 본고의 목적은 한국불교용어의 로마자표기 현황을 검토하고, 아울러 현행 규정과 모순되지 않는 범위에서 그리고 현재 서구 학계에서 통용되는 한국불교의 로마자표기 사례들을 비교 ․ 분석하여 필자 나름의 세칙을 제시하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 필자는 근년의 한국학술지인용색인(KCI)에 등재된 불교관련 논문의 로마자표기 사례를 분석하여 인명, 지명, 개념어 등의 로마자표기가 일관성 없이 사용되는 사례를 지적해보았다. 우선 필자는 한국의 표준 표기법인 문광부 방식과 해외에서 많이 사용되는 매큔 - 라이샤워 방식을 제시하여
두 방식의 차이를 명확히 제시하면서 아울러 두 방식의 인명표기가 다른 점도 摘示 해 보았다.
현행 문광부 방식은 띄어쓰기나 대문자 표기 규정이 없는데 불교표기에서는 이런 규정이 꼭 필요하다. 따라서 한국어 자모의 표기는 문광부 방식으로 하되, 띄어쓰기 등의 통사규칙은 한국어뿐 아니라 서양언어의 관습도 고려할 필요가 있음을 역설했다. 또한 원지음표기의 원칙을 인명 ․ 지명의 고유명사뿐 아니라 일반 개념어에도 확장해서 적용하는 것이 타당함을 밝혀 보았다. 이어서, ‘한국 禪’의 적절한 로마자표기를 알아보면서 ‘Seon’과 ‘Zen’의 두 표기의 차이를 분석해 본 후 ‘Seon’이 더 적합함을 논증해 보았으며 더불어 ‘간화선’, ‘화두’ 등 한국 선과 관련된 어휘에 대한 표기에 대해서도 바람직한 기준을 고찰해 보았다. 다음으로 통사적인 원칙으로서 띄어쓰기와 대문자 사용에 대한 원칙을 제시해 보았으며 결론에서는 올바른 로마자표기의 기대효과를 정리해 보았다.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the current use of romanization of Korean Buddhist terms; to analyze it in comparison with some typical examples by foreign scholars; and to propose the author’s own prescription. To serve the purpose, the author made a case analysis of romanized Korean Buddhist terms as shown in the Korean Citation Index(KCI) and then pointed out not a few inconsistent romanizations of Korean Buddhist proper names and key technical terms. To help one understand the transcription of the Korean Language, the author first of all presented the two standard rules currently being used, the one by the government(2000) and the other by McCune - Reischauer(1939), while at the same time demonstrating the different transcriptions of personal names between the two.
Both the present rules lack the principles for word division and capitalization despite their necessity for the Buddhist romanization. Thus, the author emphasized that the transcription for Korean consonants and vowels should follow the existing governmental system, but that the syntactic rules like word division should reflect the feature of both Korean
and western languages like English. Besides, the present author made it clear that the principle of transcribing by indigenous sound should be applied to the technical terms in general as well as to the proper names.
Next, he investigated which is the appropriate romanization for ‘한국 禪’, ‘Korean Seon or Zen’, and extended such discussion to other Korean Seon Buddhist terms like ‘간화선’ and ‘화두’. Finally the author proposed some principles for syntax, viz., word division and capitalization, and also several expected effects of correct romanization for the Korean Buddhist terminology. |
