| Abstract | 한국근대 불교는 격변하는 사회상황 아래서 개혁사조를 띄고 있다. 이의 선구자의 한 사람이 만해 용운(萬海龍雲, 1879~1944)선사이며, 그에게는 개혁 이념서로 <조선불교유신론>(1910 탈고, 1913 출간)과 신행 지침서로 『불교대전』(1914) 등 많은 저술이 전한다. 본고는 이 가운데 <불교대전>의 성립과 구조를 분석하여 교의적 성격을 밝히는 것이 목적으로, 이를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, <불교대전>은 한국에서 처음 편찬된 불교성전으로, 근대 불교개혁사조를 이끌어나간 상징적인 작품이다. 만해선사의 <조선불교유신론>이 그 실천이념을 밝힌 것이라면, 이 <불교대전>은 신행(信行)을 이끌어나갈 지침서이며, 이들은 같은시대에 이루어져 상호관련을 가지고 있다.
둘째, <불교대전>의 편찬에 앞서 만해선사는 일본을 방문하여 불교계 상황을 구체적으로 파악하며, 난조 분유(南條文雄)·마에다 에운(前田慧雲)의 <불교성전(佛敎聖典)>(1905)의 영향을 받고 있다. 즉 경전 인용의 형식 등에서는 같은 점이 보이나, 내용구성의 체계 등은 독자성이 확연하다.
셋째, <불교대전>은 전권을 9품으로 구성하여 경·율·론 삼장에 걸친 경전 439종 1,711회의 인용으로 편찬하고 있다. 이들은 한결같이 한국에서 유행한 경전으로, <고려대장경> 1,511부 6,802권을 열람하여 금구(金句)를 채록하고 해석·현토한 것이다.
넷째, <불교대전>은 불·법·승 삼보의 신앙체계를 중심으로 사회구제인 포교로 연결시키고 있다는 점이다. 경전을 직접 인용한 품·장·절 61항을 마련하여 각각 소제목을 주고 있는데, 이들 소제목을 살피면 만해선사의 편찬의도인 교의적 성격이 드러난다.
다섯째, <불교대전>은 편찬출간 이후 불교의 사회적 위상을 고양시키는 한편 불교전적의 찬술에 많은 영향을 주었다. 그리고 이는 현재까지 성전으로서의 생명력을 지니고 있다.
The modern Korean Buddhism reflected a reformative trend under the violent change of social situation at the times. Seon Master Manhae Yong - un(萬海龍雲, 1879~1944) was one of the most famous pioneers. His main texts, among many writings, the reformative ideological book Joseon bulgyo yusillon(朝鮮佛敎維新論 Revitalization of Korean Buddhism, completion of a manuscript 1910, publication 1913) and the Buddhist faith and practice guide book, Bulgyo Daejeon(佛敎大典 The Great Summary of Buddhism, 914). The purpose of this paper is to show the doctrinal character of Bulgyo Daejeon by analyzing the establishment and structure of Bulgyo Daejeon as follows:
Firstly, the Bulgyo Daejeon(佛敎大典) is the first Buddhist canon of it's kind published in Korea which symbolically led the reform trend of modern Buddhism. The Joseon bulgyo yusillon(朝鮮佛敎維新論) explains the practical ideology while Bulgyo Daejeon(佛敎大典) is a guideline that leads the Buddhist faith and practice. Accordingly, both texts are deeply inter - related each other as they are published at the same period.
Secondly, Master Manhae visited Japan in order to understand specifically the Buddhist situation there before his writing about the Bulgyo Daejeon(佛敎大典).
Maybe he was influenced by Nanjo Bunyu (南條文雄)·Maeda eun (前田慧雲) who edited the Bukkyō shōten(佛敎聖典 1905). Even though the quotation of Buddhist scriptures in he Bulgyo Daejeon is similar to the that of Bukkyō shōten in terms of format, the structure of contents in the Bulgyo Daejeon's is clearly independent.
Thirdly, the Bulgyo Daejeon consists of 9 chapters and edited by quoting all sūtra - piṭaka (sermons collection) across sūtra, vinaya, śāstra (經律論 the three divisions of the Buddhist canon). It mentions about 439 scriptures, 1,711 timesof them. All the scriptures were very popular ones here in Korea. Master Manhae persued 1,511 sections, 6,802 rolls of the Goryeo daejang gyeong(高麗大藏經 Korean Buddhist Canon) and interpreted them in detail.
Fourthly, the Bulgyo Daejeon connects directly the faith system centered on the Three Treasures(三寶; the buddha, the Dharma, and the saṃgha) to the missionary activities of social salvation. Master Manhae arranged the directly quoted 61 articles of chapter·division·section from Buddhist scriptures and gave each subtitle to them. These subtitles clearly explain the intention of Master Manhae and also show the doctrinal character he intended.
Fifthly, the Bulgyo Daejeon has enhanced the social status of Buddhism and also influenced greatly to the editing of many Buddhist texts. In addition to that, the Bulgyo Daejeon still keeps it's vitality as holy text in Buddhism up to the present. |
