| Abstract | 한국과 중국의 경계에 서 있었던 옥관빈은 독립운동가, 실업가, 불교개혁가, 불교거사로서 길지 않은 42년간의 생을 살았다. 스승 안창호의 영향 아래 신민회의 핵심 취지인 '신민(新民)'과 '자신(自新)', 즉 자력에 의한 신민을 수용하였고, 이는 그의 좌우명이 되었다. 상해망명 초기에 '여덕양행'설립에서부터 1924년 이슬람교에 가입해서 제기한 회교혁신운동, 1926년 불교에 귀의하여 태허대사를 도와 법원(法苑)을 설립, 「중국불교진흥책」을 통해 불교혁신과 계몽운동을 추진한 것에 이르기까지, 당시 시대정신인 신민·자신·혁신운동과 밀접한 관련이 있다고 판단된다. 따라서 그는 일생동안 지속적으로 잡지 출간, 도서관 설립, 학교 설립 등 계몽운동을 주장하고 실행하였던 것이다. 그 연장선상에서 1928년 '국민공론' 잡지를 창간하고 5·4운동의 핵심정신인 '과학'과 '민주'를 주창하였다. 이러한 이념을 바탕으로 중생구제를 발원하며 제약회사인 '불자약창'을 상해에 설립, 중의약의 과학화를 선도하여 현대 중의약 발전에 기여한 그의 공로도 결코 작지 않다. 그의 핵심정신은 멀리는 양계초 신민설, 자강, 계몽사상 등 신문화운동의 계승과 일정한 관계가 있으며, 가까이로는 안창호 신민·자강·자신의 계승이자, 5·4운동의 핵심이념인 과학·민주 정신을 실천한 것이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
Ok Gwan - bin, an independent activist, businessman Buddhist reformer, and Buddhist devotee who stood on the border between Korea and China, lived a 42 - year - long blue life. Under the influence of his teacher, Ahn Chang - ho, he accepted the core pursuits of the ‘Shinminheo’ which were ‘progressive renewal of citizens’ and ‘self - renewal.’ In other words, he accepted self - reliant renewal of oneself, and this became the motto of his life. From the establishment of the company, ‘Yeodeok Yanghang’ in his early years of Shanghai exile, the Islamic Reform Movement that was brought up again after he joined Islam in 1924, his return to Buddhism by helping Master Taixu to establish Bop - wen in 1926, to the promotion of Buddhist innovation and enlightenment through 「Chinese Buddhism Promotion Plan」, it is concluded that all of them were closely related to the ideas of ‘progressive renewal of citizens’, ‘self - renewal’, and ‘The Innovation movement.’ Therefore, he constantly practiced enlightenment movements, such as publishing magazines and establishing libraries and schools. Along with these, in 1928, he published a magazine called ‘National Public Affairs’ and advocated ‘science’ and ‘democracy’, the core spirits of the 5·4 Movement. Ok Gwan - bin's credit to contributing to the development of modern Chinese medicine by establishing the medical company Fo Ci in Shanghai through initiating ‘Save sentient beings’ (based on the ideology described in the earlier sentence) and by leaving the scientific development of Chinese medicine is never small. The foundation and core ideas of his ideology are distantly related to the succession of Yanggyecho Thought and closely related to the core ideology of the 5·4 movement, ‘science’ and ‘democracy’ that he practiced throughout his life, which is also the succession of Ahn Chang - ho's ‘progressive renewal of citizens’, ‘self - strengthening’ and ‘self - renewal’.
