| Abstract | 본 논문은 고려 중 ․ 후기 빼어난 선시를 남겼던 진각혜심(眞覺慧心, 1178~1234)과 원감충지(圓鑑冲止, 1226~1293)의 선시 중에서 ‘애민시(愛⺠詩)’를 대상으로 한다. 애민시는 백성을 가엾고 불쌍히 여기는 마음으로 쓴 시이다.
혜심의 애민시는 민중과 유리된 채로 깨달음을 구하는 것은 헛된 것이라고 역설하고, 세도가들이 민중을 수탈하고 있음을 비판한다. 그리하여 구도의 자세로 깨달음을 구하면서도 민중의 피폐한 삶을 살펴보는 자세를 견지하고, 그들을 구제하기 위한 방안을 모색하기도 한다. 다시 말해 혜심의 애민시는 궁극적으로 보살행의 실천을 지향하고 있다고 하겠다.
충지의 선시 중 애민시는 더욱 많은 비중을 차지한다. 그의 애민시는 혜심의 애민시에 비해 민중들의 삶을 세세하고 사실적으로 그리고 있다. 충지의 애민시는 혜심의 애민시처럼 보살정신을 애써 강조하지는 않고, 오히려 백성들의 처참한 광경을 목도하고도 아무것도 할 수 없는 자신의 무력감을 노래한다. 그러나 그 무력감의 바탕도 중생들의 아픔을 안타까워하는 보살심임에 분명하다.
본 논문은 혜심과 충지의 애민시를 통해 일반적인 선시의 분류 속에 잘 등장하지 않는 애민시가 두 선사의 시세계에서 중요한 영역임을 확인한다. 그 면모는 설잠 김시습, 허응당 보우, 청매인오 등에게도 보이며, 조선 후기나 근대의 선사들에게도 나타나는바, 선사들이 쓴 애민시를 더욱 깊이 살펴보는 것이 앞으로의 과제이다.
This thesis aims to explore compassionate poetry (哀愍詩), including poems of Jingak Hyesim (眞覺慧諶, 1178-1234) and Wongam Chungji (圓鑑冲止, 1226-1293), who created remarkable poetry in the middle and late Goryeo period. 愛⺠詩 is a poem that conveys pity and sympathy toward sentient beings.
Hyesim's compassionate poetry emphasizes that it is futile to seek enlightenment while separated from people, and criticizes powerful leaders’ extortion of them. Thus, while seeking enlightenment through the approach of composition, he examines the wretched lives of the people, and seeks ways to rescue them. He established a “Bho” (寶), similar to today's foundation (財團), to prevent hunger among residents, and wrote a poem about it. In other words, it can be said that Hyesim's compassionate poetry is ultimately oriented toward the practice of Bodhisattvas.
Among the poems of Choongji, compassionate poetry (愛⺠詩) occupies a greater proportion. Compared to Hyesim's poetry, his poetry depicts people's lives in detail and realistically. Unlike Hyesim's, Choongji's compassionate poetry does not emphasize the Bodhisattva spirit, but rather expresses his helplessness, unable to do anything even after witnessing the pitiful sights of the people. However, it is clear that his feeling of helplessness is rooted in his role as a caregiver who feels sorrow for the pain of sentient beings.
This thesis confirms that compassionate poetry, which does not appear in the general classification of Seon (禪) poetry, is an important genre in the poetic world of Hyesim and Chungji. |
