| Abstract | 일반적으로 불교논리학을 체계화 한 인물이 진나(陳那)라고 하지만, 세친(世親)이 저술한 『논궤(論軌)』의 단편들을 면밀히 분석해 보면, 불교논리학 이론의 많은 내용들이 그의 시대에 이미 완성되어 있었었음을 알 수 있다. 예를 들어 삼지작법의 추론식, 사인(似因)을 불성인(不成因), 부정인(不定因), 상위인(相違因)의 셋 구분하는 것, 인(因)의 삼상(三相) 이론, 자띠(Jāti)의 존재론적 효용에 대해 긍정하는 점 등이 그것들이다. 이를 보완하고 발전시켜서 진나의 불교논리학이 탄생하였고, 현장이 번역한 『인명입정리론』과『인명정리문론』을 통해 불교논리학이 동아시아에 소개되었다.
원효는 『판비량론』을 통해 현장의 학문을 비판하는데, 그 근거가 되었던 것은 바로 진나의 제자로 추정되는 상갈라주가 저술한 『인명입정리론』의 오류론이었다. 그런데 그 오류론 가운데 소별불극성(所別不極成)이나 능별(能別)불극성의 경우 상갈라주가 새롭게 추가한 항목이며, 원효는 『판비량론』에서 이런 오류를 활용하여 논지를 전개한다. 따라서 『인명입정리론』은 『판비량론』 논쟁학의 토대이면서 한계이기도 했다.
또 현장이 고안했던 추론식을 보면 주장명제 앞에 ‘승의(勝義)에 있어서’라는 한정사가 부가되어 있는데, 이는 인도의 『중론』 주석가로 『반야등론』의 저자인 청변(淸辨)의 자립논증적 추론식에 그 기원을 둔다. 그러나 이렇게 한정사를 부가하여 추론식을 작성하는 방식이 보편타당한 것은 아니었다. 『정명구론』의 저자인 월칭의 경우 이런 방식에 대해 비판적이었다. ‘승의에 있어서’라는 한정사를 사용하여 추론식을 고안했던 현장은 물론이지만 이를 비판했던 『판비량론』의 원효 월칭의 존재를 몰랐기에 청변적 방식의 범위 내에서 논의를 벌였던 것이다.
일반적으로 원효를 화쟁과 회통의 사상가로 평한다. 그러나 우리는 『판비량론』에서 이와 상반된 원효의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 『판비량론』에서 원효는 현장이 고안했던 유식비량이나 대승불설을 증명하기 위한 추론식을 비판하면서 새로운 추론식을 제시한다. 또 『판비량론』에서 보이는 원효의 이런 비판적, 논쟁적 면모와 아울러 『삼국유사』 ‘원효불기(元曉不羈)’ 항목의 내용이나, ‘만인(萬人)의 적(敵)’이라는 원효의 별칭 또『금강삼매경론』의 저술 일화등을 취합해 보면 원효에게는 화쟁가라기보다 논쟁가라는 별칭이 더 어울린다. 자신감 넘치는 논쟁가! 『판비량론』을 통해 확인하는 원효의 새로운 면모다.
Many scholars say that Dignāga systematized Buddhist Logic. However, upon deeply analyze the contents of Vādavidhi of Vasubandhu, one can find that most theories of Buddhist Logic were already invented at the age of Vasubandhu. Dignāga improved and developed Vasubandhu's theories and completed Buddhist Logic. Dignāga's Buddhist Logic was introduced to East Asian nations through Nyāyamukha and Nyāyapraveśaka, which were translated by Xuan Zang.
In Pan-Bi-Ryang-Ron, Won Hyo criticized the scholarship of Xuan Zang, and his criticism is based on the theory of logical fallacies written in Śaṅkarasvāmin's Nyāyapraveśaka. Among the theories of logical fallacies in Nyāyapraveśaka, aprasiddhaviśeṣaṇa and aprasiddhaviśeṣya seem to have been newly added by Śaṅkarasvāmin. In Pan-Bi-Ryang-Ron, Won Hyo discussions are based on these principles of logical fallacies. Therefore, we can conclude that Nyāyapraveśaka is not only the basis but also the limit of Pan-Bi-Ryang-Ron.
In India, Xuan zang invented a syllogism proving Mind-onliness(唯識). At the head of pratijñā(宗) statement, he added a word “tattvatas(眞故)” as a quantifier. This quantifier is derived from the Bhāvaviveka syllogism of Svātantrika Madhyamaka. In India, Candrakīti of Prāsaṅgika criticized the efficiency of this quantifier. But Xuan Zang and Won Hyo were unaware of this criticism. Their discussions were made under the influence of Svātantrika Madhyamaka.
Many people believe Won Hyo was a philosopher of harmony. However, in Pan-Bi- Ryang-Ron we find scholarship opposite to this popular belief. Moreover, we read Won Hyo's biography of the title “Fetter-free Won Hyo”. One of his nicknames was “An Enemy to thousands of people”. In the story of the process of writing Geum-Gang-Sam-Mae-Gyeong-Ron, we know Won Hyo's pride as a brilliant Buddhist scholar. If we put together all these stories and the tone of Won Hyo's arguments in Pan-Bi-Ryan-Ron, we can find another aspect of Won Hyo. He was a man of great pride and an enthusiastic debater.
