| Abstract | 본고는 20세기 초 근대불교학사에 큰 획을 그었던 레닌그라드학파를 대표하는 테오도르 체르바스키(Theodor Stcherbatsky, 1866-1942)의 삶을 재구성하고 이를 통해 그의 삶 속에 보이는 러시아 불교학의 특징을 지적한다. 러시아 불교학은 현지 전통을 무시하는 기존의 서유럽 불교학을 비판하며 유럽과 아시아의 중간, 즉 유라시아로 규정된 러시아의 지리적, 문화적 특성을 살려 불교 문헌에 대한 현지인의 학습방식과 해석방식을 적극적으로 수용하는 불교학을 추구하고자 하였다. 또한 1917년의 시월혁명 이후에는 새로이 등장한 볼셰비키 정부의 이데올로기적 정책에 발맞추어 불교를 인류의 과학적 성과의 최첨단에 서있는 맑시즘에 부합하는 종교로 해석하기도 하였다. 러시아 불교학의 역사를 다시금 구성해 보는 것은 오리엔탈리즘 역사의 새로운 단면을 부각시키기 위해서 뿐만이 아니라 불교학이라는 학문 분과의 성과는 언제나 역사적인 조건들 속에 이루어져 왔다는 사실을 상기하기 위해 필요하다.
This paper reconstructs the life of Theodor Stcherbatsky (1866-1942), the leading scholar of the so-called “Leningrad School” of Buddhist Studies. Russian Buddhist Studies, in accordance with the “Eurasian” identity of Russia as the combination of Europe and Asia, strived to incorporate the native reading of the Buddhist tradition. Also, it presents Buddhist philosophical doctrines in line with Bolshevik ideology after the October Revolution of 1917. These two unique characteristics of Russian Buddhist Studies are embodied in the life of Stcherbatsky. His life is worth of being retold not only to illuminate different aspects of the history of Orientalism, but to remind us of the fact that the achievement of modern study of Buddhism has been conditioned by historical circumstances.
