| Abstract | 근대 돈황학의 성립은 오럴 스타인이 돈황 천불동 장경굴에서 발견된 불교 고문헌과 미술품을 영국으로 옮기고 전 세계에 알리면서 시작되었다. 물론 돈황학이 서구의 여러 박물관과 도서관을 중심으로 활발하게 진행되면서 많은 학문적인 발전을 이루었지만, 이 사건은 20세기 초반 근대 아시아가 겪어야 했었던 슬픈 약탈의 역사를 대변하고 있다. 사실 우리나라 또한 오따니 콜랙션이란 이름으로 본의 아니게 돈황 유물의 일부를 보존하고 있는 국가가 되어버렸다. 이 논문은 근대 돈황학의 성립에 결정적인 역할을 했던 오럴 스타인을 중심으로 그의 성장기와 실크로드 탐험의 동기 그리고 그가 지니고 있었던 오리엔탈리즘적 경향들을 살펴보려고 한다. 그리고 가능하다면 스타인의 돈황까지 탐험을 하게 된 계기와 돈황에서 발견된 문헌과 미술품을 서구로 밀반출하는 배후에 그 당시 유럽의 학계에 만연했었던 오리엔탈리즘적 경향이 중요한 역할을 했다는 점을 밝히려 한다.
Modern Dunhuang Studies have started when Aurel Stein brought old Buddhist manuscripts and paintings to England from one of the thousand Buddha Caves in Dunhunag and made known of them to the Western world. Although there has been academic progress under the name of Dunhuang Studies in the museums and libraries in the West, it actually symbolized one of the sad histories of plunder Asia had to undergo under the name of modernization during the early 20th century. South Korea unintentionally becomes one of the countries in which Dunhuang manuscripts and paintings are preserved under the name of Otani Collection in the National Museum.
This paper will look at Aurel Stein, a central figure in the establishment of modern Dunhunag Studies. It observes his life, his motive for exploring Chinese Turkestan and his Oreintalist attitudes. If possible, it will try to clarify that Orientalism spreading throughout European scholarship could take an important role in Stein's expedition all the way to Dunhuang, the eastern end of Chinese Turkestan, and in his decision to bring all those manuscripts and paintings to the Western world. |
