| Abstract | 계는 불교라는 종교에 들어가는 가장 중요한 덕목이다. 그러므로 불교사를 볼 때, 시대를 불문하고 계에 대하여 설명하지 않는 시기가 없었다. 대승불교에서는 율보다 계를 부각시킨 시대이다. 율이라는 형식보다 계라는 내용이 보다 중요하다고 생각하였기 때문이다. 대승불교의 계를 우리는 보살계라고 한다. 대승불교의 이상상인 보살이 지녀야하는 계이기 때문이다. 초기부파불교와 달리 대승불교에서는 율장이라는 텍스트를 따로 두지 않고, 경장에서 계율에 대한 설명을 한다. 이는 계를 붓다의 말씀, 즉 진리로서 이해한 결과라고 생각된다. 대승불교시대에서의 계는 다양하게 해석되고 이해된다. 계에 시대정신을 담아 생명력 있게 끊임없이 발전시켜 나아간다. 보살계는 10선계, 3취정계, 10중48경계로 발전되어간다. 10선계는 10선업도에서 발전된 것이다. 10선업도 자신만이 아닌 남까지도 선한 행위를 하도록 계도하는 형태로 시대에 걸맞게 변형시켜 계로서 수용하였다. 복잡하지 않고 단순하지만 현실성 있게 이해한 결과였다. 3취정계는 섭율의계·섭선법계·섭중생계의 3가지 계를 말한다. 대승으로서의 보살은 3취정계에 의해서 자리이타행을 완성시킬 수 있다. 보살은 단지 악을 그치는 섭율의계를 지키는 것만을 강조하는 것이 아니라, 모든 선을 행하여 모든 중생을 포섭하는 것도 역시 중요하다는 것을 설명한다. 10중48경계는 성문의 250계를 바탕으로 하여 새로이 세운 계이다. 10중48경계는 단순히 악을 제지하는데 그치지 않고 적극적으로 善을 실천하는 데에 있다. 이처럼 대승계는 시대정신에 따라 자신과 남이 동시에 실천하도록 하는 것에 있으며, 궁극적으로는 선을 행하는 데에 초점을 맞추어 해석되는 특징을 발견할 수 있다.
Precepts are the most important item of virtue included in Buddhism. Therefore, it was explained in the history of Buddhism regardless of era. Morality was, however, emerged above precepts in Mahāyāna Buddhism; precepts as contents were thought as more important than morality as forms. Precepts of Mahāyāna Buddhism were called precepts of bodhisattva; they were the precepts that bodhisattva should bear as a ideal image of Mahāyāna Buddhism.
Unlike as in the early era of Abhidharma Buddhism, there was no text known as chapter of morality in Mahāyāna Buddhism. Rather, it described precepts & morality through light chapter. This was regarded as a result of understanding precepts as words of Budda. Precepts were interpreted and understood in various ways in the era of Mahāyāna Buddhism. Also, precepts went further and were developed without a pause by embodying Zeitgeist into them. Precepts of bodhisattva were developed into ten good precepts, threefold classification of Mahāyāna śīla, and 10 heavy precepts 48 light precepts. Ten good precepts were discovered through the ten good paths of action. Also, the ten good paths of action were transformed as time needed and were accepted as precepts not only for itself but also with the shape of what not behaved by others. It was simple without complexity but a result of understanding it in reality.
Threefold classification of Mahāyāna śīla consisted of three precepts including morality as temperance or restraint; saṃvara-śīla, morality as pursuit of the good; kusala-dharma-saṃgrahaka-śīla, and morality as altruism or supererogation; sattva-artha-kriyā-śīla. Mahāyāna bodhisattva was able to complete self-profit and altruism through threefold classification of Mahāyāna śīla. It was important for bodhisattva to keep morality as temperance or restraint; saṃvara-śīlaquit by quitting bads only. It described that it was also important to win all humankind over to your side by doing all the good. 10 heavy precepts 48 light precepts were newly made precepts based on 250 precepts of Śravāka. The purpose of them was not only to restrain the bad but also to practice the good. As such, the purpose of Mahāyāna precepts was to make self and others practice according to Zeitgeist. Thus, the central idea of Mahāyāna precepts was to do the good eventually and it was interpreted as such. |
