| Abstract | 붓다의 시신 처리 과정에 대해 자세한 사정이 열반경에 전해져 오고 있다. 본고에서는 붓다의 입멸 직후부터 불탑 건립에 이르기까지의 과정 붓다의 시신에 대한 예경, 시신 운구, 다비식 등을 중심으로 집중적으로 살핀다. 붓다의 장례식에는 신화적인 요소 즉 이적이 내재해 있다. 첫째 사라숲에서 입멸한 붓다의 시신을 운구하는 과정에서 일어난 이적은 천신들의 개입에 의해 발생했다. 천신들은 붓다의 시신을 성안으로 옮겨 안치하고 극진하게 마지막 예를 올리고 싶었고 사람들이 신성시하는 성지에서 화장하고자 하였다. 둘째 마지막 7일째 처음에 운구가 쉽지 않았던 이유에 대해서 궁구해 보면 말라족은 대체로 붓다의 장례를 자신들의 관습에 의해 치르려고 하는 점에서 천신만큼 붓다에 대한 신앙이나 신애가 깊지 못하고 있다. 셋째 점화에서 일어난 일은 가섭의 등장을 중요시하고 있다. 가섭이 붓다 사후 사실상 붓다의 후계자이다라는 것을 보여주는 장치라고 보인다. 가섭이 붓다에게 마지막 예를 표하지 않는 이상 장례가 완결될 수 없다는 것은 가섭이 장주이며, 붓다의 후계자임을 천명한 것이다. 시신 운구과정에서 다비에 이르기까지 몇 가지 이적이 운위되는 것은 붓다를 단순히 한 평범한 인간으로 여기는 잘못을 시정하고 있는 역할을 하고 있다. 생전에도 붓다는 범상한 인간이 아니었듯이 죽음 직전에도 이적이 나타날 수 밖에 없다는 것이다. 출생 때 나타난 이적처럼 이 세상을 떠날 때도 이적을 보임으로써 붓다의 신비성을 담보하고 있다. 따라서 그의 장례는 보통 인간의 장례식과 다를 수밖에 없다. 그러나 한편 붓다를 지나치게 초인간화 내지 신격화하려는 경향으로 나아가지 않고 있다. 열반경 제본이 기술하고 있는 이적이 한결같지 않다는 사실은 붓다를 과도하게 신격화하려는 의도를 제어하고 있는 것이다.
The Mahaparinibbana-suttanta in early Buddhism contains a long narration of the Buddha’s funeral in detail. We can meet some mythological elements in the account of his funeral. I make an attempt to treat these mythological accounts to reveal the meaning underlying them. Mallas, after paying respect to the body of the Buddha at the Sala Grove for 7 days, wished to carry the body of the Buddha southward to the southern part of the town and beyond, and there cremate the body of the Buddha. But the deities did not agree with Mallas who eventually could not help but follow the deities intention. The main difference lies in where the body of the Buddha was respected and cremated. Unlike Mallas who would treat the body of the Buddha in an ordinary way, deities wished to have a special ceremony suitable for the Buddha. They intended to have the body of the Buddha respected in the town and cremated in the sanctuary place. Mallas tried in vain to set light to the Buddha’s pyre because deities would not allow them to do. Deities made it sure that MahaKassapa paid homage at the feet of the Buddha before the pyre was to be set alight. This intervention of the deities is taken to show that MahaKassapa was a lawful successor to the Buddha. When MahaKasssapa paid homage at the feet of the body, the pyre of the Buddha burst into flame by itself. When the body of the Buddha was burned, only bones remained. Of the five hundred linen wrappings which wrapped the body of the Buddha only two were not consumed, the innermost and the outermost. Water rained down from heaven and extinguished the pyre; and water came from the Sala trees and did. These miracles are analyzed to show that the Buddha’s funeral was different from that of ordinary people since the Buddha is extraordinary while alive. However, Buddhists did not go too far to the excessive deification of the Buddha.
