| Abstract | 붓다 당시 브라흐만교는 크게 두 가지로 나눌 수 있다. 브라흐민 계급의 신앙과 대중들의 신앙이 그것이다. 브라흐민 계급은 베다를 공부하거나 제사를 지내거나 고행을 통하여 창조주 브라흐마의 천계에 도달하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 왕 및 왕족을 위하여 커다란 희생제의를 거행하는 것이 브라흐민 사제계급의 큰 역할이었다. 반면에 대중들은 호신용 주술신앙을 유지하고 있으면서 창조주 브라흐마를 신앙하고 있었던 것으로 보인다. 붓다가 탄생하기 이전에 이미 인도인은 수많은 신들을 섬기며 살고 있었다. 붓다도 대중들이 깊이 신앙하고 있던 신들을 완전히 배척하거나 무시하지 않았다. 그리고 붓다는 정면으로 배척하기보다는 적당히 수용 내지 변용하면서 대중들에게 자신의 가르침을 펼 수 있었다. 붓다는 당대의 브라흐만교의 신화나 신앙체계를 채용하였다. 그리고 거기에 새로운 상징적인 의미를 부여하고 불교 메세지의 기틀로 삼았다. 사람들에게 널리 알려진 것이 있다면 그것을 비판적으로 수용해 사람들에게 불법을 가르치는 수단으로 이용한 것이다. 인간의 행복과 불행이 주문이나 주술적인 의식 또는 제사나 어떤 전능한 초자연적인 존재에 달려 있는 것이 아니라 그 자신의 행위에 의해서 좌우된다고 하는 것이 신화에 대한 붓다의 입장이다. 붓다의 관심은 각 개인의 해탈에 있었다. 붓다는 사람들이 제사나 주술에 구속되어 자유의지를 상실한 것을 먼저 시정하고자 하였다. 붓다는 브라흐민 계급의 희생제의에 대해선 매우 강하게 비판하고 대중들의 신앙체계나 의례에 대해선 포용적인 입장을 취하고 있었고 일반 대중의 주술 신앙에 참여하고 있던 브라흐민의 주술 행위에 대해 온건하게 인정하지 않았다. 이런 서로 다른 붓다의 입장은 윤리라는 틀에서 기인한다. 명백하게 해악을 가져오는 희생제의에 대해 강한 반대의 입장을 취하여 살생 대신 자비를 가르치고 어떠한 바람직한 이익을 가져오지 못한 브라흐민의 주술엔 비판의 강도는 희생제의 만큼 강하지 않았다. 그리고 마지막으로 일반 대중의 신앙관을 붓다의 가르침에 들어맞도록 변형시켜 수용하였다. 결국 힌두 신화에 대한 붓다의 태도는 인간의 윤리적 행위라는 시각에 기인한 것이다.
In the Buddha`s time, there are a lot of gods(devas) whom people worship. Vedas are full of myths and legends with gods, divine heroes, demons and other supernatural beings such as principal actors who could be propitiated and won over to grant prosperity for worshippers. Some deities such as Agni in the Veda literature are not of good moral character; they are greedy and jealous just like human beings. There are two trends of worshipping numerous gods, including Brahma, God of creator. One is to attain Brahma world by studying Vedas and performing animal sacrifices while the other is to worship gods by popular magical practices. The former is done by the brahmin classes and rich families while the latter is practiced by ordinary people. The Buddha does not criticise all the practices relating to the worshiping of gods in Vedism and Brahmanism, but accept some. He rejects or accepts beliefs in gods in terms of moral standard. He strongly rejects animal sacrifice involving the killing of living beings, even including plants, let alone animals and human beings. He also dismisses belief in gods who are morally mean; offering of oblations to Agni or Soma is prohibited since Agni, the god of fire and Soma, the god of wine are not a moral model. On the whole the Buddha’s attitude is tolerant towards belief in the many supernatural beings who are worshipped or propitiated by the mass of the common people. Buddha`s tolerance towards folk beliefs may be seen to have educative effects. It made easier a gradual and gentle infusion of Buddhist notions in such a way that the original folk-beliefs are finally transformed to serve the teachings of the Buddha. He puts Brahama, the supreme God in Brahmanism into the lower place in the world of heaven, much lower than Nibbana. We call the good means the way he deals with beliefs in gods in Vedism and Brahmanism.23 |
