Abstract본 논문은 고려 묘지명 중 재가자의 묘지명을 바탕으로 임종의례와 시다림, 다비의례 등 불교 상장례 전반에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 임종의례의 경우, 『불설관무량수불경』과 『불설무량수경』, 『불설아미타경』 등에 근거한 십육관(十六觀)과 십념(十念)이 통일신라 이래 고려에 전습되었으며, 8세기 초반에 신라에 유입된 『불설무상경』은 고려시대 재가자의 임종 행법에 영향을 미쳤음을 말하였다. 한편 시다림 행법의 경우 『범망경』에 근거한 신라시대의 예와 함께, 『불설관정수원왕생시방정토경』에 따른 시다림 행법이 고려시대에 행해졌음을 말하였다. 한편 삼국 이래 행해진 다비는 고려시대에 민간에까지 확산되었음을 말하는 가운데, 이차장(二次葬)과 관련해 고려시대에 시행된 권안(權安)의 예와 의미를 설명하였다. 또한 묘지명에 기록된 묘장다라니(墓葬陀羅尼)의 전통과 관련해 『불설관무량수불경』 내지 『현밀원통성불심요집』 등이 고려 묘지명 내용에 영향을 미쳤으며, 고분 출토의 범자경(梵字鏡) 역시 묘장다라니의 한 예로서 불교 상장례의 한 요소가 되었음을 말하였다.

This study surveys Buddhist funerary and burial rituals(喪葬禮) by examining epitaphs(墓誌銘) of lay Buddhists of the Goryeo period. As for deathbed rites(臨終儀禮), the sixteen meditations(十六觀) and ten recollections(十念) based on the Sutra of the Meditation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life(佛說觀無量壽佛經), Sukhavati-vyuha Sutra(佛說無量壽經), and Amitabha Sutra(阿彌陀經), which had been practiced in Korea from the Unified Silla period, were performed. The Anityata Sutra(無常經), transmitted to Silla in the early eighth century, appears to have impacted deathbed rites of lay Buddhists during the Goryeo period. A funerary rite, known as Sitarim(屍多林) and based on the Dharma Net Sutra(梵網經), was performed in the Silla period, and another practice following the teaching of the Foshuo guanding suiyuan wangsheng shifang jingtu jing(佛說灌頂隨願往生十方淨土經) was also carried out during the Goryeo period. The cremation(茶毘), which began to be practiced in the Three Kingdoms period, was adopted by lay Buddhists in the Goryeo period. This study also examines cases of “kwonan(權安),” referring to the practice of temporary placement of the body at Buddhist temples, and elaborates upon its meaning in relation to the practice of secondary burials(二次葬). With regard to the practice of funerary dharani(墓葬陀羅尼), it shows that the Sutra of the Meditation on the Buddha of Immeasurable Life(佛說觀無量壽佛經) or Xianmi yuantong chengfo xinyao ji(顯密圓通成佛心要集) influenced the contents of Goryeo epitaphs. It further demonstrates that bronze mirrors with Sanskrit letters(梵字鏡) found within tombs were also formed a part of Buddhist funerary and burial rites during the Goryeo.
