Abstract | The Pali Tipitaka as used in Theravada Buddhist countries is considered to play various important roles. In Thailand, the Pali Tipitaka is not only a religious text but also a main source of Thai wisdom. The recent call for a greater role for Thai wisdom mainly comes from the awareness that the Western way of thought that dominates the modern Thai way of life is something that should be seriously examined. This paper will examine one important Western mode of thought which is generally called science and the attempt by Thai traditional thinkers to create Thai wisdom as a tool for examining that Western mode of thought through the reading and interpretation of the Pali Tipitaka. |
