| Abstract | 膨大な数の仏教の経典の中で，自殺をテーマにしたものは一つもない．さらに，仏典に記録されている自殺事例の特徴についても，包括的な検討はなされていない．本論文では，中国の大乗仏教の経典を調査対象とし，自殺の動機や原因を分類することで，大乗仏教の経典に記録されている自殺現象の全体的な特徴を明らかにした．大乗仏教の経典に登場する自殺事例は，大きく3つのカテゴリーに分けられる．すなわち，「宗教的自殺」，「利他的自殺」，「自在的捨身」である．最後の「自在的捨身」は，悟りを開いた者が行う独特の自殺とされる．中国の大乗仏教の教義では，この3種類の自殺はいずれも一般的に受け入れられており，時には奨励されることさえある． |
