Abstract佛教源於五竺,但印度故尚口耳相傳,加之歷史概念不彰,故對佛教關鍵人物和事件皆難索解。面對此一挑戰,碑刻銘文和其他考古資料被證明具有不可替代之價值。在印度次大陸發現的銘文中,有許多與佛教有關,對它們的研究為研究印度和南亞佛教的歷史、哲學、社會和其他各方面提供了基礎。



基於佛教金石學的重要性,2019 年8月20日至21日,我們在牛津大學聖安妮學院(St Anne’s College)舉辦了“中亞和東亞地區的佛教金石雕造、保存和研讀”研討會,以此來推動佛教石刻碑銘領域之中的學術研究。在本次研討會上,來自歐美東亞地區的22 位與會專家學者在佛教文獻、考古、歷史與社會學等領域之中展開了深入的交流,討論主題共分為“石刻造像”、“石刻地域所見佛教”、“佛教墓誌銘”、“佛教石經”、“佛教石刻材料所見禪宗與密宗”、以及“佛教石刻所見的士大夫、皇族婦女、地方網絡與神聖敘述”等六個部會單元。我們挑選其中12篇論文加以編輯整理,出版為此書。
