| Abstract | 필자는 「印度 法寶信仰의 변천 小考」란 제목하에 印度 법보신앙의 초기 형태와 변천에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 法寶의 佛寶化와 인도 法舍利 信仰의 형성 및 전개 추이를 고찰한 가운데 다음 내용을 밝혀 보았다. 인도 법보신앙의 초기 형태는 僧伽의 日課 및 수행원리 중에서 발견된다. 또한 煩惱 滅盡과 윤회해탈의 전제로 법보를 수용한 채, 敎法 久住의 예로서 법보를 신앙했음을 알 수 있다. 한편 불법 傳授의 예를 통해 法寶에 대한 초기 신앙적 인식을 볼 수 있으며, 이후 功德 및 惡罪 소멸 원리로, 讓災와 治病, 葬送과 追善의 예로 法寶가 인식되었음을 알 수 있다. 한편 聞誦功德의 강조 및 대승불교의 전개 속에 법보에 대한 신앙이 구체화된 바, 佛塔信仰과의 관련 속에 佛舍利에 대응한 法舍利로서의 위상이 확립, 2세기를 즈음해 탑 안에 法舍利로서 경전이 納入된 정황을 볼 수 있다. 탑 안에 法舍利로서 經卷을 납입, 공양한 예는 순례승들 기록을 통해 볼 수 있는 바, 緣起法頌 및 佛法身偈의 納塔 등은 法寶의 佛寶化 양상을 보이는 좋은 예라 할 수 있다. 탑 안에 緣起法頌 등을 납입한 예는 한국 초기 불탑 조성 양식에 영향을 주었다. 한국불교 初期 造塔은 인도 法寶信仰의 변천 예에 따라 法舍利를 봉안한 造塔이 행해졌으며, 후대에도 이런 예는 造塔의 중요 規矩로 자리 잡았음을 볼 수 있다.
Under the title “A Study on the Changes of Dharma-Ratna Faith in India,” this study set out to investigate the early forms and changes of dharma-ratna faith in India. The study thus traced the process of dharma-ratna turning into Buddha-ratna and the formation and development of dharma-sarira faith in India. The findings were as follows:The early forms of dharma-ratna in India are found in the works and ascetic exercise principles of samghas. They had faith in dharma-ratna as an example of keeping dharma over a long period while accepting dharma-ratna as the premise of klesa expiration and moksa. The examples of dharma delivery offer some hints about the early perceptions of dharma-ratna faith. Since then, dharma-ratna was regarded as the principle of expiration of pious acts and wicked sins and as the example of dispelling disasters, treating illness, and funeral marches. The faith in dharma-ratna became specific based on the emphasis on the pious act of listening to dharma and the progress of Mahayana. The status of dharma-sarira was established in correspondence to Buddha-sarira in its relations with the faith of Buddha-stupa. By the 2nd century, they had Sūtras enshrined in stupas as dharma-sarira. The records of pilgrims contain the examples of having Sūtras enshrined in stupas as dharma-sarira and offering it to Buddha. For instance, Paticca-Samuppada-Gata and Buddha-Dharmaśarīra-Gata were enshrined in stupas, the example of which had influences on the ways they built early Buddhist stupas in Korea. They built early stupas with dharma-sarira enshrined in them according to the changing examples of dharma-ratna faith in India. Such an example was established as one of the important criteria of stupa building in later periods.
