Abstract | The Saṃskṛtāsaṃskṛtaviniścaya (SAV) of Daśabalaśrīmitra (12th–13th c.), preserved only in a Tibetan translation, is a treatise that expounds the essential doctrines of major Indian Buddhist schools. Among the thirty-five chapters in total, Chapters II–XII discuss the ideas of the Sarvāstivāda, which was one of the most influential schools in the Indian Buddhist tradition. The theory of elements (dharmas), which is the foundation of Sarvāstivāda thought, is described in Chapter IX. This chapter is a significant source of information concerning Indian Buddhism. While studying this chapter, I edited the Tibetan text and then translated it into Japanese. However, the Japanese translation was published prior to the critical edition. Since the translation (Yokoyama 2021, 2022) was divided into two parts, I now offer the Tibetan text in two parts corresponding to the two parts of the translation. The first part is presented in this paper. In addition to the textual studies and translation, I have already published two articles on the doctrinal contents of this chapter. Yokoyama 2018 offered an overview of the chapter and identified its textual sources. In that paper, I introduced the important previous researches on the SAV, which are therefore not listed in the present paper. Yokoyama 2019 clarified the textual lineage of the Sarvāstivāda theory of elements that was transmitted to the SAV. |
