| Note | Chanju Mun (Buddhist Ordination Name: Seongwon) is currently teaching Buddhist philosophy at University of Hawaii – Monoa. He received a Ph. D. in Buddhist Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2002. He had been a researcher at exiled Tibetan Drepung Monastic University in South India and at the University of Tokyo and has taught East Asian Buddhism at the University of the West in Los Angeles.

| Abstract | 백용성(1864-1940) 의 제자들 가운데 윤고암 (1899-1988)은 하동산 (1890-1965)과 더불어 조계종의 종정으로 몇 번에 걸쳐서 봉직하였다. 윤고암은 스승인 백용성의 정신을 충실히 계승하여 일본 강점기에 형성된 일본불교의 영향으로부터 선불교의 부흥운동과 한국 불교의 전통인 독신 승단의 확립에 매진하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 윤고암은 백용성과 다르게 사회적 문제에 관심을 집중하지 않았고 주로 불교 교단의 문제인 정화불교운동에 관심을 가지고 그 문제를 마무리하려고 노력하였다. 세계적인 평화학자인 요한 갈퉁은 평화 건설을 다섯 가지 차원에서 다루고 있다. 그의 이론에 따르면, 우리는 첫째의 환경의 차원에서 생태학적 균형을, 둘째의 인간의 차원에서 인간의 깨달음을, 셋째의 사회의 차원에서 사회의 발전을, 넷째의 세계의 차원에서 세계평화를, 다섯째의 문화의 차원에서 문화의 적응성을 실현해야 한다. 이렇게 될 때, 그는 우리가 다섯 가지 차원에서 평화를 온전히 건설할 수 있다고 주장하고 있다. 윤고암은 사회적 이슈인 사회정의, 인권, 환경, 노동권, 통일, 민주주의, 등에 거의 무관심하였고, 사회적 구조적 평화보다는 개인적 정신적 평화를 우선시하였다. 그는 우리가 개개인의 차원에서 개인적 정신적 평화를 구현하였을 때, 사회적 구조적 평화는 자연스럽게 이루어질 수 있다고 보고 있다. 요한 갈퉁의 평화학 이론을 적용한다면, 우리는 윤고암이 기본적으로 둘째의 차원인 인간의 깨달음을 통해서 평화를 건설하려고 하였던 평화운동가라고 볼 수 있다. 윤고암은 한국불교의 통합주의적 전통을 계승하여 통합주의자가 되었다. 그는 어떤 불교의 수행과 이론 체계를 다른 어떤 불교의 수행과 이론 체계보다 우월하다고 주장한 적이 없다. 선불교로 수행하였지만, 그는 또한 교리의 학습을 게을리 하지도 않았다. 선을 수행하면서도, 그는 또한 밀교와 정토의 수행을 병행하였다. 그는 본인의 통합주의를 화엄철학을 통해서 이론적으로 정립하여 다양한 불교의 수행과 이론 체계를 통합하려고 노력하였다.
Although we are difficult to consider Yun Goam as an active peacemaker at the social and structural levels, he tried to create peace at the individual and spiritual levels. While serving as the highest spiritual leader of Korean Buddhism, he also attempted to build up peace at the order’s, not at the social and national levels. He prioritized individual and spiritual peace to social and structural issues such as justice, human rights, environmentalism, labor rights, democracy, unification, and so on. He might argue that if we accomplish individual peace in ourselves, we will naturally create peace at the social and structural levels. Because he loyally inherited syncretic Korean Buddhism, he did not exclude any other Buddhist doctrines and practices available to his times and did not place any specific philosophy or practice over others. Even though he learned and practiced Seon Buddhism and became a Seon master, he did not exclude textual studies at all. He did not hierarchically classify the chanting of Tantric spells, the recitation of the names of Buddhas and bodhisattvas, the recollection of Buddhist images, and other forms of practice. He, therefore, harmonized various practices, based on the doctrinal foundation of Huayan philosophy.
