Abstract | Choey koro is one of the farming related festivals celebrated in Upper Manang, also known as Nyeshang Valley. The valley situated in the trans-Himalayan region of Manang district in Nepal. The average elevation of the district is between 1880-8134 meters. The average elevation of inhabitation area of the Nyeshang Valley is 3500 metersand extended in 700 square meters. The valley has nested seven Village Development Committees, viz Pisang, Ghyaru, Ngawal, Braga, Manang, Tanki-Manang and Khangsar. Due to cold climate, farmers in Nyeshang Valley can produce only single crop in a year. They are barley, wheat, buckwheat andpotatoes. However, in these days they have begun to harvest vegetables such as turnip, peas, carrot, green leaf vegetable, cabbage, and so on. In Nyeshang Valley, sometime harvesting season encounters snow fall, it covers the ripen crops. In such unfortunate circumstances, farmers could not harvest even a single crop. We cannot imagine how they could feed themselves in the whole coming year. Therefore, from the beginning of the farming and until harvesting, farmers celebrate and perform different festivals and rituals which they believed would protect the crop and increase the production. |
